Most bitterly contested of the battles has been that for the nomination of mayor. John K. Tabor, former State Secretary of Labor and Industry, appeared a shoo-in for the Republican nomination, but the Democrats had a two-way race.

The organization endorsed former Judge Harry A. Kramer, but he was opposed by City Councilman Peter F. Flaherty, running as an independent Democrat. At a $100-a-plate fund-raising dinner attended this week by Democratic loyalists, Mr. Flaherty was lashed by Mayor Joseph ll.

Barr in this way: "For want of a more descriptive word, I suppose you could best describe him as a Republicrat." There had been charges that Mr. Flaherty was receiving the support of Republican District Attorney Robert W. Duggan and "Goldwater Republicans." Also at stake Tuesday are nominations for sheriff, five seats In City Council, four Common Pleas judgeships, coroner, jury commissioner and hundreds of borough and township offices. Fighting Goes To The Dogs Billy Conn, former light-heavyweight champion who nearly won the heavyweight crown from Joe Louis, was back in the fight news this week. Only this time it involved a dog fight.

M. 2-FILM 4 HOLLYWOOD AND THE STARS A 7 II MEET THE PRESS Color Race Track, stacks up to be an even better event than the Kentucky Derby. The field is led by Derby winner Majestic Prince, who has never lost in his eight-race career. The difference in this classic for three-year-olds is the appearance of several new horses, most of whom reflect high early speed, the ability to go to the front and stay there. In this 1 3-16 mile race, a shorter distance than the Derby, the early speed of such as Al Hattab and Jay Ray can make a difference.

As in the Derby, second and third choices will likely be Top Knight and Arts and Letters. Chic Anderson will call the race with color commentary from Eddie Arcaro and Heywood Hale Broun. Jack Whitaker hosts. Channels 2, 9, 10. (Color) WIDE WORLD OF SPORTS covers the Rebel 400 Stock Car Race from Darlington, S.

the World Gold Skate Roller Skating Classic from New York's Madison Square Garden and the Big Eight Conference Outdoor Track and Feild championships from Ames, Iowa. Channels, 4, 7. (Color) THE JACKIE GLEASON SHOW is a rowdy musical comedy affair with the spotlight once again on "The Honeymooners." If you enjoy the Gleason variety of good knockdown, dragout verbal brawls, don't miss this one. Norton and Ralph lock horns and trade insults when Ed wins a color TV set in a movie raffle. This prompts surly but tuneful songs like "If I Wuz Talkin' to Him" and a nifty nasty pool room sequence.

Channels 2, 9, 10. (Color) The subject of THE GHOST AND MRS. MUIR is given some substance tonight with the introduction of a psychiatrist who is an expert on illusion, or so he thinks. When Mrs. Muir divulges her secret to him he convinces her that she is suffering from hallucinations.

Having "cured" her, he goes to Gull Cottage to show her how foolish she has been. Amen. Channels 7, 11. (color) The Army is not impressed by surprise parties celebrating an impending grandfatherhood, as Steve discovers on MY THREE SONS. Steve is involved in such a soiree when a ramrod-type general, whom Steve had been trying to sell for weeks, decides on a surprise visit.

Arthur O'Connell plays the spit-and-polish officer. Repeat. Channels 2, 10. (Color) 9-11 Like any other actor, Marlon Brando has had his share of bombs, one of which is "The Appaloosa," on SATURDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIE. He plays a buffalo hunter who comes home to this border town to live a good clean life.

He brings with him a fine stallion stud with which he hopes to begin a breeding operation. But the not-so-good guys in the area won't let him. They begin by stealing his stud, causing him to take after them when they run below the border. They call this a "Comedy Concert" with the boys doing several of their old skits as well as singing "Old Man River." Features of the show are Irwin C. Watson's Gorilla Act and Dave Madden, the only other "Laugh-In" regular on hand.

It's face of the mistress of an attorney for whom the detective bears a deep grudge. "Birds do come home to roost," he murmurs as he sets out to put the murdered girl and murderer together. Lloyd Bochner is featured. Repeat. Channels 2, 10.

'Hard-Cell' Gives Holdup Holiday Banks in the Pittsburgh district are getting an unexplained but welcome respite from holdup men. There have been only two stickups in Allegheny County banks since the beginning of the year. Law enforcement officers are puzzled over the sharp contrast to last year when 21 banks and savings and loan firms were hit in the first four months. One FBI agent, only half in jest, offered an explanation, "We like to think it's because most of the guys inclined to rob banks are in jail."
