(P) Jack Dempsey and Jack Sharkey split a purse cf slightly more than $450,000 for their battle last night, which drew a gate of $1,075,000 and attendance of 82,000, according to Tex Rlckard's estimate. It was the fourth million-dollar fight in ring history, In all of which Dempsey has been a principal. Rickard's contracts with the fighters called for Dempsey to get twenty-sev en and a half per cent and Sharkey twenty-two and a half per cent. Dempsey was understood to have been guaranteed $250,000 and on a percentage basis it figures to go slightly over that, with Sharkey getting a little over $200,000.

Here are the promoter's figures: Total receipts, $1,075,000. Dempsey's share, $252,759. Sharkey's share, $206,803. Federal tax, $53,750. Rickard's share, $454,188.

Sharkey buried two lefts in Qempsey's body and Dempsey stepped back. Sharkey slipped and went down in his corner but was up without a count. No blow was struck and the bell ended the session while Sharkey was on his knees.

ROUND FOUR Sharkey was a bit less confident as he came out and missed a wild right. Jack bobbed out out of the way of Sharkey's Jab. Dempsey drove Sharkey around the in his coiner but was up with the ring with fierce punches to the body. Sharkey breathed hard as Dempsey nailed a left to the chin and a right to the ribs. (JP) "It Jack Dempsey has been away he has come back." So said Gene Tunney, who knows Dempsey both in and out of the ring. "I never saw him fight better," said the champion as Jack Sharkey, the confident, was being carried to his corner.

A left hook from Dempsey's gloved fist a few seconds before had caused the youth from Boston to lose all interest in the subsequent proceedings. The title-holder's first observation after Sharkey had been counted out, was a question. "Did you notice how far that last blow carried?" he asked. There was no objection to his answering his own question, and Tunney continued: "Not very far, not many inches, but, oh what power there was behind it." "Yes, Dempsey can hit," Tunney continued. "He always has been able to hit, and I suppose he always will be, as long as he stays In there," pointing to the ring, "where a blow with a lot of power behind it means something." Tunney liked the bout.

He followed it closely from the start to finish. He saw no foul. "The blows that were questioned were not in the groin," he said. "As I saw them they were fair." Dsmpsey rush him again and Jack missed a long left to Sharkey's Head; Sharkey was short with a left to the chin but his right smacked solidly on Dempsey's jaw. Dempsey missed a long left.

Dempsey came steadily on, however, ramming away to the body but Sharkey was all elbows on defense. Sharkey slapped a right to Dempsey's face. Dempsey followed him and they bobbed at each other until Sharkey shot Dempsey's head back with a terriffic right uppercut to the Jaw. It was the cleanest and hardest punch of the fight so far. Dempsey leaned in however, pushing Sharkey to the ropes.

ROUND SEVEN-Dempsey was weav ing again and Sharkey held as the fire grew hot about his body. Demp-Sharkey's stomach and followed with sey suddenly whipped his right into a straight left hand smash to the jaw that sent Sharkey down. Sharkey got to his knees at the count of nine, swayed and fell flat on his face as the referee counted ten. Sharkey's handlers claimed the blow was foul but the referee disallowed it. Probably the greatest ovation given a fighter was accorded Dempsey as the referee raised his hand in victory.

Sharkey licked Jack with two rights upper cuts. Dempsey, reeling and groggy, moved about the ring undetf a fusllage. Sharkey smashed him again with rights. Dempsey was groggy as Sharkey missed a long right. The bell caught Sharkey half way through a right swing.

Dempsey went to his corner very tired. ROUND TWO Dempsey's seconds worked on him while Sharkey lay back calm and confident. Jack came out slowly and Sharkey missed a left. Sharkey drove Dempsey to tne ropes with a right to the Jaw. Dempsey fought fiercely at Sharkey's body but laid on heavy in the clinches.

Dempsey missed a wild left hook. In close they swapped jolts to the ribs: Dempsey held as Sharkey clubbed to the body. Sharkey nailed Dempsey with a left to the head and drove Dempsey to the ropes with short rights to the jaw. The Boston boy was pounding at will, solid smashes to the chin that rocked the former champion. They slugged fiercely in the center of the ring as Dempsey nailed Sharkey with two hooks to the chin.

Dempsey was very tired after the flurry but managed to hook his left hand twice on Sharkey's the deciding seventh round and ripped in close, as he had done consistently in the previous rounds. They had whirled around, Dempsey's head buried in Sharkey's shoulder when suddenly the former champion sank a short vicious diow to tne sanorsi waist line. Sharkey turned his head toward the referee, apparently to claim a foul, and doubled up but short vicious blow to the sauor tney were stlu mixing as Dempsey snot over ftls left. There had been offamnt V.TT Rpfprvo O'Sullivan to interfere or warn Dempsey if he thought the latter's blows too low, and although he hesitated a second or two, as Sharkey went down on all fours, the referee quickly took up the count and at ten waved the sailor "out." OBSERVERS DISAGREE To observers on some sides of the ring, it appeared Dempsey's right to the body was several inches below the waist line and therefore foul. To others it appeared on the border line while just as many more were equally confident the punch was altogether fair.

The referee shared the same view and his decision appeared upheld when Dr. William Walker, boxing commission's official physician, declared after examination of Sharkey that no evidence of injury or a foul blow was apparent, at least on the surface. To a majority of ring-side critics Dempsey seemed to have a distinct if not decisive advantage on points when the knock-out came after forty-five seconds Of the seventh round had elapsed. Sharkey's offensive wilted or was held back after his slashing first round drive. He gave ground steadily under Dempsey's persistent hammering to the body.

BLOWS THAT JARRED Occasionally the sailor countered with hooks to the jaw that Jarred Dempsey, notably in the third and sixth rounds, as well as the first. He cut Dempsey's right eye, mouth and nose, while remaining himself vir tually unmarked, but his attack was for the most part wild. But Sharkey's usually accurate left Jab failed to stop Dempsey's rushes as it had Maloney's. The sailor's vaunted right cross frequently swished aimlessly through the air as Dempsey easily blocked it or ducked out of its reach. Sharkey's confidence, the factor that has been so conspicuous in his ring successes seemed to ebb as he found his best blows missing or failing to bring down his foe while Dempsey beat a steady drum-fire on the sailor's ribs.

His youth and speed alone were not sufficient to stand off the aggressive, bulldog onslaught of the former champion. The young giant of twenty-five, who had broken up the aging attacks of Harry Wills and Mike MeTigue, found something far more explosive in the "hollow shell" of the thirty-two year old Dempsey fighting machine. i nrij YOU'LL CHEER THIS GREtfT BASEBALL ROMANCE' IIIKi On the Stage 3 Armand and Perez Athletic Novelty 11111 ffiiiiiiiiiii Now Showing William Boyd SS. in "Peter 'B. (AP) The official slow-motion pictures of the Dempsey-Sharkey fight showing the milling In the seventh round, revealed today that the disputed'blow which contributed to Dempsev's victory was apparently fair. The films were shown only to newspaper men. NEW YORK, July 22 The "hollow shell" ot Hollywood was loaded after all, It seems, and today Jack Dempsey at thirty-two is on the high road of a sensational come-back as the result of a stunning knock-out victory over Jack Sharkey. In a finish as sudden and dramatic as it was marked also by sharp con troversy, the former king of the heavyweights dropped Sharkey for the count of ten In the seventh round of their fifteen round match and put an abrupt end, for the present, to the confident course of the young Boston Bailor. CLAIMED FOl'L a vicious rlEht to the midsectlon- a blow that aroused bitter controversy as to whether it was fair or fcul started Sharkey downward and a short left hook, flush to the chin, completed the downfall.

Bharkey himself, as well as his handlers, claimed a foul and they were supported apparently by many ringside observers as well as others In the vast crowd of 82,000 that filled the Yankee stadium. But the referee. Jack O'Sullivan, after a moment of hesitation himself, decided it was a fair blow and tolled the count that brought victory to the bronzed OMu somewhat battered Dempsey. It was a hard-won triumph for the man who sat on the heavyweight throne for seven years. It was a slashing, mauling battle that saw him rally from impending defeat In the first round, batter his young rival with a terrific attack to the body and finally bring his foe down.

HIS PINCH RETURNS It was a stirring battle that saw the once great "Manassa Mauler" summon back much, if not all of his old punching power, all of his old gameness, and a good deal of his old stamina to batter Into defeat a foe-man who had all of the assets of youth and speed but little of the hitting accuracy that had marked his previously sensational rise to heavyweight prominence. Whatever the elements of dispute aroused by Dempsey finishing blows, the victory was sufficiently decisive to restore much or Dempsey's oia prestige, gain him one of the greatest ovations of his career, lift him over the first of his come-back barriers and send him on the way to a return championship battle with his con queror 01 ZaiS ptember, uene iun ney. TINNEY NEXS. Although Promoter Tex Rlckard today declined to make any definite announcement of his plans, it is re-carded as likely that Dempsey and runney will fight for the crown between September 15 and 20, possibly in Philadelphia where they met last year, but probably at Soldiers' field, in Chicago. Rlckard is understood to have virtually completed arrangements to shift the fight to a site outside New York because neither last night's battle ground nor any other in the metropolitan district affords seating capacity to compare with the arenas in Philadelphia or Chicago.

The Dempsey of today may not be the "Dempsey of Toledo," the "man killer" that battered Jess Willard into helpless hulk as devastating an exhibition of punching as the ring has ever seen. FOOT-WORK SLOW He may not, either, be as formidable as he was four years ago, when he slugged his way to victory over the giant Argentinian, Luis Firpo. But he has come a long way along the come-back trail, observers seem agreed, since the dreary, rainy nigni last September when he floundered around azainst Tunney Dempsey's once lightning like speed of foot has vanished although his shiftiness remains. His punches carry again terrific power" and somewhere apparently, he has regained a great deal of the old resources that enable him to "take It" and come back to win. THAT FIRST ROUND Last night, in the first round he was perilously close to defeat.

He was tottering, groggy, under the impact of a series of solid hooks to the head, and bleeding from the moutn, but he- had the stamina to weather this sudden storm and keep plunging in with a relentless attack to the body that paved the way for the finishing blows, where a year ago he was unable to rally from a first round pum-meling. It took only a few seconds for last night's finishing picture but It was a thrilling climax In spite of the sub sequently disputed views of It. Not only was "there controversy- over whether Dempseys blows were fair or foul but wide difference of opinion as to whether it was a right or left to the body that was low and a right or left to the head that provided the climax. THE FINAL ROVXD Dempsey cs well as Sharkey settled the latter issue. They agreed It was a right hook to the body and a left hook to the Jaw that finished the victorious combination.
