M. Oliphant, of 321 Thirty third Avenut, North, won first place and 8 medal in the Girls' Declamatory contest, held last night at HumeFogg Techincal High School.

Declaiming "America Goes to War," an editorial from the American Labor Magazine, Miss Oliphant placed first over nine other contestants who were representatives of the eighth grades of Nashville junior high schools. Winners of second and third, respectively, were Miss Joy Greene, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. M.

Greene of 2513 Essex Place, delivering Rupert Hughes' "I Am an American," and Miss Evelyn Coker, giving R. P. Putnam's "The Flag and Patriotism." Other contestants were Mary A Alice Harden, Lorene Dowlen, Jeannene Peal, Kathryn Mankin, Audrey Benefield, Ann Martin and Nell Ruth Carney. Singers, Orchestra In Double Show By ALVIN S. WIGGERS For the first time, we believe, the Ward-Belmont Glee Club the orchestra combined forces last night in a public appearance.

Even with such a double attraction the size of the audience was far from what it should have been. The orchestra played three numbers, of which the two more difficult and classic ones were not on the program presented by the orchestra last Monday evening. Rossini, who was represented by the overture to his "William Tell" at the previous concert, furnished the piquant overture to his "Barber of Seville" last night. Kenneth Rose conducted this piece in the right spirit, and the players got into the mood splendidly. Edward Elgar's "Pomp and Circumstance" March at the close of the program had the requisite dignity and fulness of tone.

Charles H. Hill's "Romance," which might suitably be entitled "Indian Lament," was over from the previous program and received a performance worthy of it. Sydney Dalton conducted the 52 members of the Glee Club, who looked lovely in spring dresses of several different pastel shades. They sang exceptionally well. "Waters Ripple and Flow." arranged by Deems Taylor, had as good soloists Barbara Ramsey, soprano, and Mildred Genet, contralto.

With Helen Jackson Parker, harp, and H. G. Stubblefield, French horn, the chorus sang "I Hear a Harp," by Brahms, and with the orchestra, from which Dalton got some lovely soft effects, they sang Pergolesi's "Glory to God," and Elizabeth Carey, Betty Sweat and Mary Howell formed a trio. Harvey B. Gaul's setting of Walt Whitman's "I Hear America Singing" was sung with Elizabeth a nice solo, caplendidly, with the orchestra as background, and Jean Irma Johnson played excellent piano accompaniments throughout the evening.

Editor Dies W. B. Romine Newsmen's Dean Dies at Pulaski W. B. Romine, 80, Had Sold Weekly Recently; Funeral Tomorrow PULASKI, May B.

Romine, 80, dean of Tennessee newspapermen, died at his home tonight from cancer. He had sold the Pulaski, Citizen, the paper he edited nearly half a century, only a few months ago. The funeral will be held at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon, the place and minister to be announced later Born in McNairy County, Tennessee, Romine received his early education in the schools of that county, later going to Nashville, and graduated from the Peabody Normal College, University of Nashville. While in school and afterward, when teaching, he was more or less intimately connected with newspapers and educational journals as correspondent or department editor, occasionally taking the place of the editor temporarily. Not until he entered, the Citizen office in the 1894 did he devote himself exclusively to newspaper work.

Six months later he bought out his partner, and has since conducted the business alone. He has served as urer of the Citizens' buildsecretary ing, county registrar of vital statistics for most of Giles County, and business manager of the Pulaski cemetery. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and a Son of the American Revolution. Romine's successor as editor-publisher of the Citizen, Harwood Smith, is a native of Giles County, but has spent a number of years in Nashville and Columbia, engaged in journalistic work. Smith bought a half interest in the Citizen last fall, acquiring complete ownership of the paper on April 1, 1942.

In 1894, at the age of 33, Mr. Romine bought the Pulaski Citizen from the estate of its former owner, Mrs. John Bateman Smith. On learning something of the history of the paper, which was founded in 1854 by two Pulaski citizens, Ab Watkins and George E. Purvis, Romine adopted the original policy as announced by the founders.

He is survived by two brothers. Workman Jailed On Robbery Count A 24-year-old sheet metal worker listed as Carrol Owell Dyer, of 1325 Fifth Avenue, North, was in city jail last night charged with vagrancy and loitering and highway robbery in connection with the Tuesday night robbery of Henry Elks of Cross Plains, Tenn.
