Thursday for Judge Walter P. Smart, who died two weeks before he was scheduled to retire after a 57-year law career. Judge Smart, who at age 82 was the oldest member of the Common Pleas bench here, died at 6 p.m.

yesterday in Suburban General Hospital, Bellevue. He would have been 83 on July 14. He had undergone an operation there last February, and re-entered the hospital a week ago. Friends will be received at Frank W. Simons Funeral Home, 2025 Perrysville North Side, where services are to be held.

Burial will be in Highwood Cemetery, North Side. He had been re-elected to his third 10-year term on the bench in 1963, but had decided to step down under Pennsylvania's new judicial retirement law. A native Pittsburgher who lived at 3304 Perrysville he was the son of C. Walter and Marion Pearson Smart. He was a graduate of Allegheny High School, Yale University and the University of Pittsburgh law school.

He became practicing attorney in 1912, was solicitor for West Deer Twp. from 1919 to 1936, assistant County solicitor from 1935 to 1936, and County solicitor from 1936 to 1938. Cpl. James Engelmeier, 21, of 345 Mansfield was killed last Thursday. His parents received his last letter the same day the Defense Dept. notification came. Cpl.

Engelhmeier, attached to the 1st Air Cavalry Division, 121st Artillery, was a graduate of Canvein High School, where he played football and base-Community College, North ball. He attended Allegheny Side, before entering the Army. He had been in Vietnam since December and had entered the Army in June, 1968. Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs.

Francis Engelmeier; two sisters, Susan, 23, and Nancy, 17; two brothers, Edward, 19, and Kevin, 12, and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. William Engelmeier and Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Reis.

US Offices Picketed Members of a United Steel Workers (USW) local set up picket lines at the union's international head quarters Downtown after defying an order to end a strike. The pickets are members of Local 5339 which has been on strike since May 14 in a contract dispute with the Calig Steel Drum Co. in Hazelwood. Calig has filed a $1 million damage suit against the USW and the local representing 55 striking employes.

John Perris, local president, and his fellow officers, were suspended by the USW and an administrator appointed. Mr. Perris said the men coted 23-13 to defy orders to end the strike. The local contends Calig reneged on the contract when it same time to put a verbal agreement on vacations into writing. moved to Bellevue in 1901, and lived there the rest of her life.

She was an active member of the Freemont United Presbyterian Church, Bellevue, the Ben Avon Women's Club, and attended Dilworth Hall College, now Chatham College. He was a graduate of Hahnemann Medical College, Philadelphia, and served one year as house doctor at Braddock hospital before opening his private practice in 1941. He served on numerous medical staff committees at the hospital and was president of the hospital medical staff Vhen he died.
