ACTION I FROLIC' 1 1 at Fox Oakland By WOOD SOANES Ronald Colman and Greer Gar- on joined emotional forces on the icreen of the Fox Oakland Thea- ter yesterday' in "Kandom Harvest" a ijlm that has been running "Mrs. MinTVr" a close second in audience approVal despite the fact that it is far behind that epic etipri in ma terial and presentation. That "Bandon Harvest" is worthy entertainment is due almost exclusively to the acting of Colman and Miss Garson without whom, it would be a pedestrian tale of double-amnesia in which author James Hilton and director Mervyn LeRoy spell out a bit of psychological fantasy irra most laborious way. Colman is a shell shocked- major when the picture opens, confined to an English insane asylum where doctors' and attendants vainly strive to strike some spark that will restore his memory and his powers of speech. On Armistice night he wanders off the reserva-- tion into therms of a little musical comedy performer.

The story of their romance is tender and attractive as she studiously gets the waVrior out of himself and manages to restore his speech and his self-confidence although she is unable to arouse any memory of his civilian past. That story told. Hilton embarks on another not quite so interesting or credible. As "Random Harvest" is Unfolded one can almost see LeRoy and his screen writers huddling over the pages of the Hilton book and finding themselves unable to discard so much as a comma. Consequently the two-plot yarn becomes bathed in lachrymose ennui as its course is paced.

Without Colman and oarson it would be a very trying affair; with them it is worthy entertainment. It has been some time since Colman has had an opportunity to do more than play a suave gentleman and he buckles down to the problems of the 'war hero witB obvious zest. For Miss Garson, too, it is a new adventure in which she even has a chance to do a song and dance. If LeRoy did not cover himself with distinction; as a director, he did his customers proud in his dual capacity as producer and no ex pense was spared on the production of the story. There are any.

number of fine actors in the supporting roles, all making valuable contributionsSusan Peters, Philip Dorn, Reginald Owen and Aubrey Mather, to name a few. "Random Harvest" has the Fox Oakland screen to itself this week with Donald Duck in a little tire trouble to brighten the evening. Fox News Has Russian Film "I swear I will not lay down.Yny arms until the last Fascist in our territory is destroyed. I swear to avenge myself bitterly, mercilessly arid ceaselessly." Thus reads the Russian people's oath; and the Soviet people are shown living up to it in "People of Russia," the special attraction on the Fox News Theater's new program which opened this noon. Another short is Peter Smith's "Marines in the Making," If vou live in Oakland or vicinity, don't worry if your cupboard is a bit short tnis coming week.

It is to be hoped that oh the sequel Colum bia employs some writers who are able to give funny sayings to the principals as well as place in comical situations. "The Boogie Man Will Get You" unites the forces of Boris Karloff and Peter Lorre and stems directly but without credits, from "Arsenic and Old Lace." It is aiivertied as the "most terrifyingjiof for Karloff but as much as I sa of its was inclined to dwell more on the comic than 1he tragic and the first nighters -appeared to get most of their 'laughs the thriller and most of their thrills the comedy. i' ft Perhaps that's the way it should be.
