Actually, there are two species, the irideus of the coastal rivers, which is a migratory one, irequentiy going to sea, and the shasta, which Inhabits the streams of the Sierra Nevadas from Mt.

Shasta southward. Both these species llftave been more or less lndls-c iminately planted in eastern waters and numerous cross- lnir rmvp nmh. ably resulted in a- i i hatcheri hnny Mock result, some of the eastern introductions are of the irideus type, which accounts for the disappearance of these fish after being stocked. Thej? simply migrated downstream toward the sea. Where the strain is definitely shasta, there appears to be no apparent attempt to leave the new surroundings, although in occasional specimens this urge to travel manifests itself.

An interesting record in this connection is that of a 14-inch which was caught twice in seven days, once at Port Washington. Wisconsin, again at Grand Haven, Michigan. The distance in a direct line is about 90 miles. The shoreline is probably nearer 200, which is some evidence of the trout's trip within the week. Popular With Fishermen Since its introduction it has become a popular fish with the eastern fisherman, probably chiefly because of the aerial antics it puts on when hooked.

No fresh-water fish puts on a better display than Mr. Irideus, or Shasta, when hooked in fast water. Like the brown trout, It can adant Itself to warmer surround ings than the native brook trout. It is not as persistent a feeder as the fontinalis, yet it is not near as fickle about its feeding as is the brownie. On its home range it spawns in Bpring.

In the east it has adopted the slogan, "When in Rome, do as the Romans do." Strange as it is. the breeding period in the new home has been adapted to that of the other two, the fall. While it does not reach the pro portions of the brown trout, it has tr 9flJi nminris in weight, the present record. Hot Only Black Mar kin 3s It is distinguished from the brook and brown trout in that it has only black markings, irregular in shape, covering the entire body with exception of the beliy. It is the only one of the three trout which has the markings extend into the caudal or tail fin.

As it attains maturity the rainbow stripe which extends entrance fee of 25 cents for adults, 10 cents for children, and free to all members of the armed forces. The Show this year will feature, for the first time, the Pergola Garden and the Old Mansion Garden.
