Roosevelt, in an Independence Day message received here by Dr. J. Stewart Nagle, executive secretary of the Pennsylvania Area of the National Conference of Christians and Jews, urged "good citizens everywhere" to support the organization's campaign for greater religious tolerance. "The educational campaign that the National Conference of Christians and Jews is carrying on seems to me to be a potent and necessary piece of work which de serves the approval and support of good citizens everywhere, the message read. "The promotion of better understanding among Protestants.

Catholics and Jews in America is truly one of the most necessary tasks confronting us, not only for the sake of lasting social peace -and good will but in order that the idealism of religion may make its most effective contribution to the welfare of the nation." INCOME TAX CHANGE URGED BY T0WNSEND By The Unite Press PHILADELPHIA, July 5 Dr. Francis E. Townsend. 72-year-old originator of the $200-a-month pension plan, told a July Fourth Town-send rally that a fiat 10 per cent tax on gross incomes instead of the innumerable present levies would provide more efficient government and also raise sufficient revenue for his proposed old-age pensions. "A tax levied on gross income would be considered payment for the privilege of living in America, he said.

"It would be a fair tax, with the millionaire paying as much in proportion as the ditch digger." Approximately 5000 attended the rally. July 4 Theodore Car dinal Innitzer, Catholic primate of Austria and foe of the Nazis, today abandoned a diocesan tour after Nazi crowds shouting "murderer!" pelted him with rotten eggs and potatoes and beat his chauffeur. The worst attack of several during his week-long tour occurred Sunday in Koenigs-brueno, 25 miles from Vienna, where the ener- getic action of Rev. Innitzer the local gendarmerie probably saved the 63-year-old Archbishop from being knocked down and beaten. The Cardinal, whose archeplsco- pal palace in Vienna was sacked by a mob last October, was showered with insults by the Koenigsbruenn crowd and his biretta (cap) was knocked from his head with an umbrella. The crowd gathered outside the Catholic church, where Cardinal Innitzer had preached a sermon on peace, and attacked him when he attempted to leave with an old overcoat hiding his priestly robes.

His personal attendant, named Martin, was showered with eggs and potatoes when he preceded Innitzer from the church and the prelate's chauffeur was mauled and beaten when he tried to bring the Cardinal's car to the church door. The chauffeur's clothes were torn from him. A school teacher led the crowd, shouting: "Herr Cardinal, your hands are sticky with the blood of Horzweber and Planetta!" Service Driven Indoors Others took up the cry. referring to Cardinal Innitzer's refusal to intercede against the death sentences imposed on Nazis after the assasi- nation of Chanceuor Engelbert Dollfuss in the 1934 Austrian Nazi putsch. Earlier in his tour, which Degan on June 26, the Cardinal had been threatened and warned to discontinue his trip.

The first unpleasant Incident occurred at Nieder Russbach on June 27. when demonstrators gathered in the square outside the Catholic Church wnere it had been planned to hold an outdoor confirmation of 12 children. The crowd compelled Cardinal Innitzer to take the ceremony indoors and kept up shouts and insults during the service. On June 29 at Ziersdorf demonstrators smashed the windows in the home of a local policeman where Cardinal Innitzer was spending the night. During the night someone also smashed the windows of the Cardinal's car in the court- GAhDN bR 1DOK Lee 5238 Lyfell Irene.
