By ELEANOR O'SULLIVAN Press Movie Writer The funniest movie of the year? Forget about "Outrageous Fortune," "The Witches of Eastwick" and "Dragnet." At this date, honors must go to John Carpenter's "Prince of Darkness." The wrinkle is: Did Carpenter intend that? Well, consider these lines, written by Martin Quatermass, a former physicist: "No prison can hold him now;" Question: "How did you know what you thought I'd say?" Answer "Because if you didn't, I don't want to know." Wait, there's more: "There's something downstairs." "It's becoming something; what?" and "We're on the brink of the ultimate truth." Actually, the ultimate truth about this movie, that is is that it's self-consciously camp and self-important but it's so dopey, you can't hate it or help laughing. However, if Carpenter's music (writ- 3 General Cinema Bargain AtaHrttMt 3M Man. That is because after the principal characters (played by Donald Pleasence, Lisa Blount, Victor Wong and Jameson Parker) have determined a swirling mass of green gook is actually Satan's son, nothing much happens. Carpenter simply steps up the mayhem against a backdrop of brilliant Ph.D.

candidates turning into zombies by dint of the green gook. The production notes say Quatermass says this about his screenplay: "He assures that all the physical principles used in the story, including the ability of subatomic particles to travel backward in time, are true." The notes also say "Carpenter guides us through a journey of terror: to a world where classical reality is turned upside down and the wrath of Satan is unleashed upon the innocent a fury that has been pent up for seven million years, waiting to explode." Carpenter doesn't explode anybody in "Prince of Darkness," but roughly half of the characters are mashed, slashed or hacked to death. This in the name of a story about good versus evil. The special effects aren't particularly clever, the mashings, slashings and hackings are undeniably gross, and the acting and lines are hysterical. Who's this movie aimed at? Youngsters, of course. Further evidence that the gook is gaining.
