it Stard Phooey! om, LfT Once a 5000-A-Weelc Radio Actress, Bea Benaderet Has Fought Off Stardom For Twenty Years And Has Won 1 1 i i eAdf Or By Haralcr Hefernan Written For The Press stars and always have enough money on tap for fashionable living. Currently Miss Benaderet is seen weekly as Peter Lind Hayes' and Mary HeaJy's somewhat lovelorn housekeeper, i 1 on "Peter Loves Mary." Channels 6, 7, 11, Wednesdays at 10 pre-empted this week by Bob Hope special. She got the job easily on the basis of references from her last employer, George Burns, for whom she toiled eight years as Blanche Morton, henpecking next-door neighbor on the now much-missed George and Gracie telecasts. "The top supporting performer has the best job in show business," says Bea. who has a housekeeper of her own in private life.

"We don't have to put on the dog no brassy front is necessary. We have more time to outselves because we're not in demand for interviews or special. extracurricular appearances." Miss Benaderet is one of that close-knit company who based their fortunes on network radio, appearing in as many as four or five broadcasts every day. That golden era, when performers earning as much as $5000 a week could walk the streets unrecognized, is past. "Of course, TV does type you more than radio," she concedes.

"I became closely identified with the chacter of Blanche on the Burns and Allen Show, and it has been something of a challenge to create a different image On 'Peter Loves tStST'VE never had a leading role J. in all my life not even in high school and I'd run like sixty if one were offered me." This reverse twist upon the usual star-struck, glamor-greedy approach to show business is the viewpoint of a woman who has fought stardom for 20 years and won. She is Bea Benaderet, charter member of that little-known but highly envied thespian aristocracy, the W.E.S.P. (Well Established Supporting Players). They can buy and sell most widely ballyhooed Mr Bea Benaderet Likes being W.
