oenenaanie airectory to attractive real estate offers all around the town. WMItsT Special to The Pittsburgh Press WASHINGTON, Dec. 12 The text of yesterday afternoon's speech by Frank J. Hogan. president of the American Bar I come to speak to you today because I am an American and a Catholic.

As an American, I glory in the traditions of our American democracy. I glory in my American rights and my American privileges. As a Catholic. I glory in the breadth of the tolerance tught by my faith. My citizenship and my faith impose on me certain loyalties, loyalty to freedom, loyalty to brotherly love, loyalty "to all the great principles that are basic iiv-both Americanism and Christianity.

In ordinary times we are inclined to take these loyalties for granted. In ordinary times, we are inclined to forget the great gift of freedom that is in our possession. But these are not ordinary times. These are times of unrest ir. many parts of the world.

In too many instances now, we see governments that dig their foundations in the swampy subsoil of hatred. In Germany, in Russia, in Italy, in Mexico, in Spain, in too many countries the light of reason has been dimmed by the shadow of bigotry. We live in a world of unrest. We see nations that once produced great contributions to the cause of civilization suddenly gone mad in an orgy of terror. We see mn suffering the lash of persecution simply because of their loyalty to the faith of their fathers, simply because of their insistence upon religious liberty.

We read the narrowing reports of old men and little children whipped down the public streets because they happened to have been born into one faith rather than another. We see brave men rounded up into filthy concentration camps because they dared to speak the truth, and in some cases for no reason, save that they were born into one faith rather than nrch. Wash. Notice of funeral South Vocational High School and Athletic They believe that, because they know and understand that one hate breeds another. We have but to look across the ocean to see that hatred hatred of race, hatred of creed, hatred of class is epidemic. In Germany, the Jew was the first and foremost victim of hate and persecution. He is still the chief victim, but now the Catholic and the Protestant too share in part his fate.

It is no accident that the government which has dedicated itself to destroying the Jews of Germany root and branch is also committed to the destruction of Christian religion. In Germany, Jews are hounded and beaten on the public highways, forced back into the ghetto, deprived of all the rights of civilized man. But in Germany today the Catholic Church is also persecuted. Cardinal Faulhaber and Cardinal Innitzer are sneered at. mocked and threatened.

Church windows are smashed, defenseless priests are attacked in the streets, Catholic children are denied the right to a Catholic education. In this same Germany the Ca tholic, Schuschnigg, former Chancellor of Austria is still under arrest. Another distinguished Catholic, Bruening, the former chancelleor of Germany, is forced to keep his silence for fear of reprisals on his friends stili in Germany. And the greatest living Catholic, Pius the Eleventh, has been vilified and insulted in the Nazi press and by Nazi leaders because he has dared to speak out firmly against Nazi oppression and persecution. He knows, and we know too, that one hate breeds another.

Wherever Jews are persecuted, there too other creeds and races will sooner or later be persecuted. This was true of the Ku Klux Klan in our own country, the Klan whose hatred was not limited to Catholics, but included Jews and Negroes as well. One thing is becoming ever more clear to serious students of history: That the Jews have become the barometer of democracy throughout the world. Where they are oppressed, as in Germany, democracy and freedom have been utterly destroyed, and Christians have also suffered. Where they are the equals of all other citizens, as in America, democracy lives and flourishes, and all men are free whatever their fatih.

Dec We in America have teen fortunate indeed that so far this disease of hatred has passed us by.

We can still feel free to speak our minds, to road whatever newspaper we p.ef cr, to vote for whatever candidate we choose, to worship God as we see fit. For a hundred and fifty years the American nation has bet-n in its faith in democracy. We know how good it is to live in a democracy, and we want to keep this democracy of ours so that we can continue to live in psace and freedom. We want no Fascism, we want no Nazism, we want no Communism here. But our desire to keep them from taking root here is not enough.

Earlier generations of Americans built our democracy. More recent generations enjoyed it and handed it on to us as a priceless heritage. But now, yesterday's ideals are being challenged, even in this country. It is no longer enough merely tc retain these ideals which have given American democracy reality. We must refurbish them, we must bolster them to meet altered conditions without sacrificing their very essence of idealism As a lawyer I habitually think in legal terms.

What greater legal application of the Sermon of the Mount was ever conceived by the mind of man than our American Bill of Rights? All Americans talk about the Bill of Rights, but how many of us know what these rights are? The Bill of Rights of the Federal Constitution consists of two small printed pages, containing 452 words, and can be read slowly and deliberately in exactly two and one half minutes and for years I have been urging every man and woman, boy and girl, to read that Bill of Rights the most glorious two small pages in all our language. There you will find, among others, the guarantees the only ones you have of your right to life, liberty, and property your right to worship as you please your right to free speech to have a free press to assemble peaceably with your fellows to petition your government to have your home respected as your castle. intendent of Buildings. 4J Aaministration Building. December 11. 1938. tne City of Pittsburrh. Allegheny County George Cemetery. at Rome an aged, ill, and beloved statesman, whose trembling voice has cried out to all the world against intolerance.

In September of this year, he addressed a group of pilgrims. I quote his words: "Abraham is called our patriarch, our ancestor. Anti-Semitsm is not compatible with the reality of this text; it is a movement which Christians cannot share. No, it is not possible for Christians to take part in anti-Semitism. We.

are Semites spiritually." I do not need to comment on this statement. It speaks for itself, and it is the only authoritative statement of the Catholic position. The moral to be drawn from what Pope Pius said was outlined a few weeks ago in an editorial published in a Catholic periodical, which is the official organ of the diocese of Michigan. I quote that editorial: "Totally out of harmony with the Holy Father's leadership are Catholics who indulge in speeches or writings which in fact tend to arouse feeling against the Jews as a race. Even when their remarks are qualified in such a way as to set the discerning on their guard, these writers should in view of world conditions today, carefully weigh the danger of creating prejudice in the minds of less discriminating readers and of seeing their writings exploited by unscrupulous promoters of public inspection at the offices of the ELECTRICAL ENGINEER -Trade Journal writing.

These great rights, proclaimed in the most precious part of the American Constitution, are the very foundations of true Americanism. And whenever they are attacked, wherever they are attacked, whether at home cr across the sears, you and I are concerned.

Catholicism, like all other religions, is vitally interested in complete religious freedom in the United States. We who are of the Catholic fsith do well to remember this. We do well to remember that only in a land where democracy and good will and understanding are the watcawords do Catholics themselves live in full freedom. We do well to remember this, all of us. Catholic laymen and Catholic clergy.

How much the American spirit of good will and understanding among all faiths has meant to Catholics in America cannot be over-estimated. Like all other creeds. Catholicism has known the bitter tate of oppression. The very first days of Christianity were marked by martyrdom to give sadistic joy to tyrant. Even in our own country Catholics have suffered from canraigns of calumny in the past.

Shall we forget the Know-Nothing Party, which knew nothing of the ideals of freedom and tolerance? Shall we forget the A. 193. at Upon the unquestionable authority of Pius the Eleventh as given to the world in his public utterances, I speak today to refute any idea that any one who preaches racial or religious intolerance speaks for the Catholic laymen or the Catholic priesthood. The true view of American Catholics was recently voiced by one who but a short while since was a really great president of the Catholic University of America, at Washington. Bishop Ryan, now of Omaha. I quote from a speech of his, as follows: "Speaking as the bishop and for the Catholics of Omaha, I denounce publicly the horrible persecution of a poor, helpless people.

My denunciation, I know, means little, but it means much when you realize that I but reecho the Judgment of the greatest moral force in the world today. Pope Pius the Eleventh. Again and ascain the Pope has condemned this persecuting mania of oflicial Germany, and particularly its persecution of the Jews. He has shown to the world often, and very clearly in the days just behind us, wht he and the Catholic church think of Hitler, Ms ideolesy, his government and its practices. The voice of the Pope may not prevail here and now.

but it will prevail. Of- this we are sure it will prevail because it is the voice of truth, the voice of justice, the voice of mercy; (Continued on Pate 38) persons moeDteo to said estate win mane payment and those having claims will present them to Mathilda' A.
