H16 Asbury Park PressSunday, June 11, 1989 BCC's Stevens, Mirabella sign professional contracts Tony graham i "IffTin fiiTPJ Mill I iilillllC give us some credibility," said Bush. "People are anxious to see how he looks. We know he can play well." Bush said rosters will remain open until July. Players interested in the OSBL should contact him at 349-6302 or 341-9200. Bush said he's been approached about starting an NCAA sanctioned girl's summer league.

"But I've got to get more interest from the high school kids and some college girls," he said. "I think the girls merit having a league. We'll see what happens. If I can stir some interest in getting even six teams involved, we could get it going by July." Eight teams will comprise the Lakewood league directed by Tom Ross. Tony Walker, Marvin Andrews, Sonni Holland, Tim Brown, Loren Jackson, Marvin Goodwine, Herman Alston, Myron Crippen, Brian Stephens, Eddie Baum, Jermain Gay and Harrie Garris (Monmouth) are on league rosters, according to Ross, who said games will be held most nights this summer with weekends off for rain dates.

Lakewood High School will place a team in the Lakewood league with Randy Holmes and Bob Bullock returning from last year's 25-2 Piners plus a slew of new faces. "Tom Ross, a 6-4 sophomore, is a player to watch," said Lakewood coach John Richardson. Ocean County College is seeking players for its men's soccer team. Any OCC students interested should contact head coach Tom Braun at the school at 255-0345. Formal workouts will begin Aug.

1. Brad McAlister, a former assistant basketball coach at Monmouth and Iona, has been hired as a full-time assistant at Siena. Tony Graham is an Asbury Park Press staff writer. Right-handers Scott Stevens and Gene Mirabella, the one-two pitching punch of Brookdale Community College's 1989 baseball team, signed professional contracts last week. Stevens (10-4, 1.78 ERA, school record 119 strikeouts in 111 innings) signed with the Chicago White Sox and will report to their rookie team in Sarasota, Fla.

Mirabella (9-2, 2.55 ERA, 107 strikeouts in 98 innings) signed with Cleveland and has been assigned to the Indians' rookie team in Orlando, Fla. Both were late-round draft picks. Brookdale coach Paul MacLaughlin said Mike Davino of Matawan, 10-3 at Brookdale in the 1987-88 seasons, signed last week with the White Sox. Davino pitched this year for the University of South Carolina at Aiken. That brings to 43 the number of Brookdale players drafted since 1971, with John Montefusco and Denny Walling reaching the majors.

Two Rutgers University seniors left-hander Kevin Conover and outfielder Eric Young were also drafted. Conover by the Chicago White Sox and Young by the Los Angeles Dodgers. Conover, from Morristown, was 5-5 with a 3.65 ERA and three complete games. Young, of New Brunswick, hit .355 and led the Knights in runs scored (60), triples (five), stolen bases (28), walks (39) and on-base percentage Young was the team MVP. The Jersey Shore Summer Basketball League has banned all high school players from the league except graduated seniors.

"Now that the league is NCAA sanctioned, college coaches want to keep up with their players' progress," said Greg Kapalko, chairman of the JSBL Board of Governors. "It would be an NCAA violation on their (coaches) part if they were to also see recruitable high school athletes during the non-recruiting period, which lasts for most of the summer." The league will conduct exhibition doubleheaders Thursday and Friday, 7:30 p.m., and begins regular-season play June 19. The Ocean Summer Basketball League and Lakewood Adult Summer Basketball League, also NCAA-sanctioned, are also scheduled for June 19 openings. The OSBL, with 10 teams, will play its games Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings at 5:45 and 7:15 at the Bey Lea Courts. The Lake-wood league will play at the Lakewood Community Center.

OSBL director Jack Bush said Alex Blackwell, along with Mike Buescher and Joe Spitale, will play for defending champion Coin Castle; Joe, Mike and Steve Paterno and high school player Jason Fichter (CBA) are slated to play for Jersey Shore; Wayne Gantt and Jesse Stout will play for Razzles; Danny McHarris, Sheldon Harvey, and Bill and Matt Stefansi will play for Royal Landscaping; Nick Werkman will head the Right to Life team and Bob Wyskowski will play for Construction. Bush said he was pleased to have Blackwell in the OSBL.
