The boys at the copy and rewrite desks, the Sunday department, the sports section (particularly the sports section, the louts), were staring their eyes out at my desk where Miss Polly Rowles was sitting. None of them heard Miss Rowles' libellous statement about herself or they would have rushed poll mcll my way with roaring protests and, probably, the hope of being introduced the bums. But Miss Rowles stuck, to her guns and went on to reveal other hitherto unpublished items about her 15 months' career in Hollywood how she fared in all those turkey pictures they handed her, how the studios make fainthearted gestures of tutoring young talent, how she was at the beck and call of the publicity departments day and night as they ordered her here and there for publicity "stills" and, how, after all this "pushing around" she was given a polite bum's rush by the studio which hired her. One of the great men at the end of Miss Rowle's first year in Hollywood cleared his throat and told her, "We're not taking up your option this year, Miss Rowles." She wanted to know why. Tunny, the beauty-conscious Carnegie Tech student body wasn't aware of this when it crowned her campus queen back in 1936 an event that paved the way to her movie career.) When she first came to Hollywood the brass hats at Universal were aghast. They pulled conniption fits and ordered a slight operation on the eye. For a year after the eye apparently "-as all right but at contract-: newal time, the movie men pretended (Miss Rowles thinks they were pretending) to be worried about It still. Which just goes to show how these Hollywood lads will lie awake nights thinking up things to worry about. They're crazy.

So Miss Rowles left the studio and tried free-lancing until she went into a hoss opera with Gene Autry. "And do you know," she confided, "that I had a perfectly grand time up there in the mountains near San Bernardino with all those cow boys while we were making the picture. I felt then I'd be happy making Western pictures for years and years, being naturally lazy. But a teeny remnant a bit left of my artistic conscience, if any, rebelled. Doing this sort of thing was simply making no use of all the training I had at Carnegie Tech, and of all the money my parents had spent on me for five years." So Polly Rowles returned east and to the Broadway stage.

She played the role of Calpurnio in Orson Welles' New York production of "Julius Caesar." Then back to Pittsburgh and wedding bells. She's Mrs. Frank C. Snyder now and far happier in that role than in any of the phoney ones she played 'way out West. Currently she's enjoying her work at the Pittsburgh Playhouse in "Tonight at 8:30." which goes into its fourth and final week tonight.

And that's the point of this essay. So good is Miss Rowles in the Noel Coward playlets that I'm sure any movie scout who faw her would immediately wire his studio. That is, any movie scout with a lick of sense. But I suppose it isn't according to Hoyle or Sam Goldwyn to be "discovered" all over again, once you've been in Hollywood and failed to make an impression through no fault of your own. In the case of Polly Rowles the movie lads failed to discern good talent or how to handle it.
