EAT, DRINK AND BE MERRY with the fabulous food pages, Sundays and Wednesdays in the Asbury Park Press. 731-SUHDAY REAL ESTATE Summer Rentals Apartments Furnished Rooms Nursing Homes Rental insurance Listings Wanted Condominiums Homes Mobile Homes Lots and Acreage Malaria resists controls The Washington Post CANBERRA, Australia Drug-resistant strains of malaria have emerged in several parts of the world and are resisting massive International efforts at control. The strains are potentially fatal and many travellers especially pregnant women cannot be treated by existing drugs. Although there have been some cases of the dangerous malaria strain called salciparum reported from South America and Africa, the center of the problem is In Southeast Asia. MUCH OF the coordination of the fight against the drug-resistant malaria and most of the research efforts to find a vaccine and adequate curative drugs has been carried out in two Institutions In Australia, the country nearest the center of the disease.

Sustave Nossal is supervising the vaccine research at his Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research in Melbourne and Robert Black is searching for a cure at the Sydney University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. Black said there were 470 cases reported here In 1979, a Jump of nearly 60 percent over the previous year and many more than the fewer than 200 a year that was the average In Australia In the early 1970s. Worse, most of the 470 cases were resistant to the wonder drug chloroquin, which had kept malaria under control throughout the world since the mid-60s. "THE WORST concentration of the resistant strain is in Papua-New Guinea, but the problem has been worsened by the movement of Vietnamese refugees," he said. "Many of the refugees pick up the disease in Indonesia and bring it to Australia and other countries like the United States which are accepting them in large numbers.

"They are getting some treatment in the staging camps but often we have to give them new courses of drugs when they arrive here." Black said the World Health Organization had classed malaria now as a "major problem." Graham Brown, the top Immunology researcher at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute, said Australian researchers were cooperating closely with researchers throughout the world, especially the U.S. Infectuous Diseases Center in Georgia. BUT THERE has been no breakthrough in the fight to control or cure the salciparum strain of malaria. It was the only one of the four malaria strains affecting human beings that had become resistant to chloroquin. The problem is that using other drugs on this strain can be very tricky.

Some of the non-chloroquin drugs cannot be used for prolonged periods and some cannot be given to pregnant women. None is a certain cure. The drug has not been tested on pregnant women for fear of injuries to the fetus. Brown's advice to people travelling to the most dangerous areas virtually everywhere in Southeast Asia away from major cities is to check with the nearest infectious disease center first. 111 wri 111 1 1C 11 csiiu cu iiuco apt ecu 11 "in Ethiopia to Angola and Mozambique.

To their critics, they represent a sinister force, a front for Moscow that establishes propaganda network and repressive security apparatuses wherever there is turmoil and instability.

Their friends view them as they view Cubans, a progressive ally that sends soldiers and doctors to combat colonialism and racism. "They are our best friends," Joshua Mkomo said last year, when he was leading a guerrilla army in the civil war in Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe. Western diplomatic sources estimate that East Germany's "Afrlka Korps" numbers as many as 10,000 men, about evenly divided among military advisers and civilian technicians and professionals. Their presence and the aid they offer is believed to be underwritten by the Soviet Union. "They may take the initiative from time to time on their own, but I think it's safe to assume that they don't do much without the consent of Moscow," an intelligence gatherer said.

EAST GERMANY'S active involvement here began a dozen years ago when it sent pilots to fly missions for Nigeria against Bia-fran secessionists. Administration leaning toward new nerve gas The Associated Press containing the nerve gas GD. These bombs were manufactured more than 10 years ago and are Becoming oosoieie. In the mid-1970s, Congress twice refused the Army permission to produce binary weapons. The Defense Department rejected an Army bid to move toward production, but research on such weapons was allowed to continue. The Carter administration has asked Congress for money this year to design binary production plants, but has stopped short of asking for actual production.

Army officials said they already have a 155-millimeter artillery round which could be filled with binary chemicals. Researchers are working on a binary warhead for a multiple rocket launcher. WASHINGTON Concern about reported Soviet use of chemical agents in battle appears to be pushing some key Carter administration officials toward a conclusion that the United States should produce new nerve gas weapons. "If the Russians continue to go the way they are going in chemical warfare, the United States will have to say 'Enough, and go into production of binary weapons," said one administration official. In a separate Interview, a senior Pentagon official said, "There is no doubt we should start building a binary plant." He cited repeated reports that the Russians have used chemicals in Afghanistan.

Binary munitions consist of two chemical agents that experts say are harmless when kept separate. They become lethal when mixed after a bomb containing them is dropped or a shell or rocket warhead is fired. The senior Pentagon official acknowledged that any proposal to Congress for authority and money to produce binary nerve gas weapons "is going to be a tough and emotional issue because of an attitude of horror toward chemical warfare." Both the Pentagon source and the administration official asked to remain anonymous. THE UNITED STATES long ago renounced first use of lethal or Incapacitating chemical weapons and In 1969 President Richard M. Nixon renounced any U.S.

resort to germ warfare. Avowedly to deter any Soviet Impulse to launch chemical warfare, the United States has maintained a stocft of Weteye bombs- All Sunday Real Estate Classifieds now appear In the Real Estate section.
