A12 Asbury Park Press Friday, Aug. 5, 1994 Obituaries For service times and other details, see Services listing Rotting fuel rods: speed up talks Deaths Actor Bert Freed, 74, veteran of stage, screen NEW YORK Bert Freed, veteran character actor for five decades and longtime officer of the Screen Actors Guild, has died. He was 74. Freed died of heart failure late Tuesday while vacationing near Vancouver, British Columbia, his son Carl said Wednesday. Born in New York, Freed made his Broadway debut in 1943 in "Johnny 2 4." He subsequently appeared in several stage plays, some 75 films and more than 200 television programs.

Freed served on the board of the Screen Actors Guild from 1969 to 1989, was its first vice president, a trustee of its Producers' Pension and Health Plans and founding chairman of its Seniors Committee. He was also active in the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists and for the past 15 years had chaired the AFTRA-SAG Credit Union. Among Freed's film credits were "Paths of Glory," "Norma Rae," "Billy Jack," "Halls of Montezuma," "Hang 'Em High" and "There Was a Crooked Man." Surviving are a daughter, Leigh Dejong, with whom he lived; and four grandchildren.

John E. Day Funeral Home, Red Bank, is in charge of arrangements. MARY ELLEN KNIESLER, 97, of Imlaystown, UPPER FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP, died Wednesday at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital at Hamilton, Hamilton Township. She was a licensed practical nurse. She was a member of St.

John's Roman Catholic Church, and a founding member of the Altar Rosary Society of the church. Mrs. Kniesler was born in the Wall Township, is in charge of arrangements. EVA J. WALLING GAFFNEY, 64, of West Belmar, WALL TOWNSHIP, died Wednesday at Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune.

She was employed by the Manasquan Board of Education for 15 years, retiring in 1992. She was born in Howell Township and lived in West Belmar for the past 25 years. Surviving are her husband, Leo; a son, Leo S. at home; a daughter, Debbie Suboyu, Brielle; three brothers, Harry Walling, Wall, Joseph Walling, Ocean Grove, and Thomas E. Walling, West Belmar; three sisters, Patricia Walling Guffey, Terre Haute, Barbara Cowdrick, South Belmar, and Dorothy King, West Belmar; and two grandchildren.

Johnson Funeral JOSEPH A. CAUFANO 94, of SPRING LAKE, died Wednesday at home. He was administrative officer for International Business Machines, New York, for 40 years, retiring 30 years ago. He was a communicant of St. Catharine's and St.

Margaret's Roman Catholic Church, Spring Lake, and a member of the Spring Lake Golf Club. Mr. Califano was born in Brooklyn and lived there before moving to Spring Lake 31 years ago. His wife, Katherine Gill Califano, died in 1986. Surviving are a son, Joseph A.

Califano Roxbury, three grandchildren, and one greatgrandchild. O'Brien Funeral Home, Ramsey, caused a stir in the Ber- gen County Courthouse and signed several autographs. He filed a complaint against Heide Aiello in February after an accountant discovered some discrepancies in the checking account. Heide Aiello said from April 10, 1992 to Feb. 1, 1994, she wrote 44 checks for amounts ranging from $600 to $9,985.

The checks were made out to cash and she said she would forge Danny Aiello's sig-, nature or her Sandra Aiello. Heide Aiello- separated from Jamie Aiello last year. They have a 2-year-old daughter. Danny Aiello has starred in i "Moonstruck," "Fort Apache: The Bronx," and "Do The Right Thing." THE ASSOCIATED PRESS HACKENSACK Danny Aiello's daughter-in-law told a judge she stole more than $200,000 from the actor's checking account over a two-year period. The actor was present when Heide Aiello, 27, pleaded guilty Wednesday in Superior Court here to one count of theft by deception.

Heide Aiello was originally charged with 89 counts of forgery and theft by deception but 88 counts were dismissed as part of the plea bargain. Heide Aiello faces up to 364 days in jail when she is sentenced Oct. 21 by Superior Court Judge Timothy Sullivan. ROTHMANN, 66, of Morganville, MARLBORO TOWNSHIP, died yesterday at John Kennedy Medical Center, Edison Township. She was an elementary school teacher in the Manalapan-Englishtown Regional School District for 25 years.

She was a member of the New Jersey Education Association. Mrs. Rothmann was born in New York and lived in Manalapan for the past 24 years. Her husband, Emil, died in 1983. Surviving are a son, Thomas New York; a daughter, Ann M.

Rothmann-Weintraub, Philadelphia; a sister, Barbara Olsen, Grosse Pointe Park, and one grandchild. Freeman Funeral Home, Freehold, is in charge of arrangements. NELLIE M. SULOFF, 74, of FREEHOLD, died yesterday at home. She served in the Women's Army Corps during World War II, attaining the rank of sergeant.

Mrs. Suloff was born in Burnham, and lived in Jersey City before moving to Freehold 16 years ago. Her husband, Joseph died in 1987, and her son, Jason, died in 1979. Surviving are a son, Joseph Spring Lake, N.C.; a daughter, Kim D. Wohlleben, Freehold; and six grandchildren.

Mr. Maioney was born in Brooklyn and lived in the Bronx before moving to Aberdeen 32 years ago. Surviving are his wife, Josephine King Maioney; two brothers, William, Florida, and Robert, Pennsylvania; and three sisters, Muriel Aitken, Florida, Virginia De Felice, Long Island, and Mildred Pucciarelli, Connecticut. He was barge captain for the Penn Central Railroad for 23 years, retiring in 1979. Eugene Allen Post of Atlantic Highlands, and the Irish Federation. Mr.

O'Connor was born in Ireland and lived in Leonardo before moving to Atlantic Highlands in 1977. Surviving are his wife, Margaret Slattery O'Connor; three sons, Thomas, Kenneth, and Neil, all of Atlantic Highlands; a daughter, Kathleen Cassaro, Port Monmouth, Middletown Township; seven brothers, Patrick, Keyport, Maurice, Florida, Chris and MARIA GIBSON, 39, of TOMS RIVER, died Tuesday at Kimball Medical Center, Lakewood, being struck by a car on Rt. 9. She was a laborer for Laborers Local Trenton. She attended Holmdel Grammar and High Schools.

Miss Gibsons was born in Red Bank and lived in Holmdel Township for 16 years and in New Smyrna Beach, before moving to Toms River six months ago. Surviving are a son, Kenneth Wilj liam Kiesei, New Smyrna Beach; her father, William S. Gibson, her mother, Maria Teixeira, Toms" River; a brother, William Toms! NICK S. KLUCHEFF, 81, BRICK TOWNSHIP, died Wednes- day at Kimball Medical Center, Lake- wood. He was a mechanical engineer for Soros New York, for 10 years, retiring 20 years ago. Mr. Klucheff was born in Odessa, Russia, and came to the United States in 1946, living in Brooklyn before moving to Brick 30 years ago.

Surviving are her four sons, Samuel Spotswood, Timothy, Englishtown, Paul, New Brunswick, and Keith, Jamesburg; two daughters, Kathy Hillyer, Kendall Park, South Brunswick Township, and Donna Hillyer, Jackson Township; her mother, Emma Glock Nicholas, Bare Foot Beach, a sister, Doris Apple- BIBLE TEACHER, SPEAKER and AUTHOR tabernacle rvro HOMAN C. MILLER, 50, a lifelong resident of BRICK TOWNSHIP, died Wednesday at home.

Mr. Miller was assistant supervisor in traffic maintenance for the Ocean County Road Department for the past 20 years. He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War. Surviving are his wife, Doris M. I Dahncke Miller; a daughter, Brenda at home; three brothers, William and Bruce, both of Brick, and Ronnie, Jackson Township; and six sisters, Betty Kennett, Shirley Cooper, and Helen Miller, all of Brick, Joan La- Vance, Manasquan, Carolyne Dun- ston, Point Pleasant, and Gloria i Hughes, Seminole, Fla.
