Zukowski, Walter Death Notices Last ma series on high school wrestling. By PHIL MUSICK Ever since the first Yankee sergeant sipped his first mint julep on the first plantation veranda, the South has been suffering at the hands of the North.

Except in WPIAL wrestling circles, where the North is regarded as something of a poor cousin doomed to labor forever in mediocrity. Traditionally, the Southern reaches of the WPIAL produce a preponderance of the district's state champions and dominate the WPIAL championships. But a time of reckoning may be at hand. "I think a great balance is beginning to appear throughout the entire WPIAL," says Coach Bob Siar, whose host Shaler team figures to dominate the Section 8 tournament which begins tonight, and duel perennial power Mount Lebanon for the WPIAL team championship. "The great strength doesn't seem to be in the South, Washington and Greene counties, any longer.

Allegheny county has more balance. Westmoreland is getting stronger." The North is making strides. In dual meets, Shaler handled every Southern team it faced but Mount Lebanon. Greensburg is 12-0 in duals and whipped Trinity, along with Canon-McMillan a major antagonist of Mount Lebanon. North Allegheny thoroughly mauled the best in the South a year ago.

"In duals, we wrestle with anybody, but when it comes to individual talent, the South hay the edge," says Siar. That edge may be crumbling because of coaches like Siar, Greensburg's Daryl Kel-vington and others. A study last year showed that Siar and three assistants spent a staggering 2400 hours on the Shaler wrestling programs. Siar works as many as 20 hours a day during the summer tournaments he operates. He is both the chairman of the WPIAL and AAU-AMA wrestling programs.

He originated the highly-successful Junior Olympic programs in Allegheny and Butler counties. "The time we spend on wrestling is so doggone fantastic, nobody will believe it if you print it," Siar laughs. The time has apparently been well spent. Siar guided Shaler's 119-pounder, Keith Nellis, to a second place finish in the U. S.

Junior AAU tournament and a berth on a U. S. team that toured Europe last summer. The Shaler High School team is one of the finest in the WPIAL. When Siar is not organizing, promoting or administrating wrestling in some manner, he is watching his two sons wrestle or helping his wife Sue keep statistics.

"She's super-interested," he says. There are other Northern coaches who are also super-interested, and the Northern kids who make it through this weekend's sectionals and a qualifier March 6 could weaken the South's dominance of the WPIAL championships, which begin March 9. Keith Nellis will be favored at 112; Klski's Bob Banks (119) and North Allegheny's Dave Rodgers (155) are defending WPIAL champions. Dave's brother, Don, will be favored at 132, and Keith's brother, Kevin, could win at 98. The following are Northern wrestlers considered WPIAL title contenders: 91 Bob Shorts, Gateway; Dennis McBeth, Southnwe-land; Bob Kennev, Greensburg.

98-Kevln Nellis, Gory Slppel, North Allegheny; Jim Skovlra, Southmoreland; Jim Zlska, Norwln. 105Keith McQualde, Greensburo; Roger Myers, Shaler. 112 Keith Nellis. Shaler. 119-Bob Bonks, Klskl Area; Keith Koskl, Lotrobe; Mike Kerr, Wllklnsburg.
