John Garfield, currently featured In "Air Force," finally gave up trying to locate a yard-tender and. on his day blithely set about mowing his lawn. A matronly lady wore down $10 worth of rubber screeching her car to a stop.

Garfield quickly discovered she wasn't a fan. "Young man," she said. "I have a house with rather large grounds. lawns i rone ana oacK, numerous rose bushes, several trees, some hedges, flowers and a Victory garden. I shall want you to take care of It once each week.

I'll pay you $10 a month, and you can start tomorrow." "Sorry, lady," grinned Garfield. "I afraid I can't handle it." The woman glared. "WSL riv ii I By KASPAR MOXAHAN Unlike George Bernard Shaw who complains because such a splendid thing as youth is wasted on the young, George Abbott is a staunch booster for those of 'teen age or a wee bit older. Only the youn? can make the world safe for youth, he believes.

This consistent sponsor of hit shows tfew producers can equal his record of smash successes down the years) has reason to admire young people. For in return for his faith in them they have helped to maintain i Mr. Monahan reputation as a producer and added to his store of earthly riches. And quite a pile of mazuma that is. too! A year ago.

when Mr. Abbott had successfully launched -Best Foot Forward." with a cast, of lively and ambitious youngsters, he observed "Tough as even the youngsters' lives are becoming because of world conditions, they are still primarily happy and untroubled. They are the only happy people in the world today. So only they can impart fresh, joyous happiness to others. This is a season when people want to escape an unpleasant world when they go to the theater.

They want to joy. It is natural that they should turn to youth to find it." Tonight and all this week Nixon patrons may have the opportunity to test the soundness of Mr. Abbott's philosophy frankly "escapist." whether his "Best Foot Forward" will have the exhilarating effect on middle-aged and graybeards claimed for -it by advance couriers. It's concerned with adolescent problems, specifically the disturbing results of a film glamor queen's arrival at a prep school. Joy Hodges is the glamor girl.

Wearying of being Lew Ayres bride in picture after picture of the Kildare series. Larraine Day walked in front of a truck and Doc Kildare lost his bride, and Miss Day mixed sighs of relief with her "dying breath." George Sanders got tired of being "The Falcon." So he'll be seen for the last time as the super -sleuth in "The Falcon's Brother," opening Wednesday at the Barry. Mr.

Sanders blithely permits a Nazi to shoot him and his brother, played by Tom Conway, obligingly takes over and the series will continue. That happens Wednesday. The next day George Sanders is resurrectedthis time as Somerset Maugham's artist chap in "Moon and Sixpence" at the Penn. Novel Beginning For Sturges Film HOLLYWOOD All of Hollywood's pet cliches to show the passage ofl time or at least the most famous! of them are going to take a terrific beating at the beginning of "The Palm Beach Story," which will star Claudette Colbert, Joel. McCrea and Rudy Vallee. Preston Sturges. who as a writer for years had to ponder over many a new way to denote tempus fugiting, is the one to poke the finger at trite methods of speeding time along.

He wrote the story and he will direct. The picture opens on Claudette and Joel being married. Then a kitten dissolves into a grown cat, a tiny rose plant grows into a bush in bloom, a calendar flits from June 1, 1937, to Feb. 2, 1942, a shiny 1937 car faded into a Jallopy and comes the title "In other words, five years have The thing which we are not permitted to mention by name in war time really hurt night club business Saturday. There were a number of vacant seats around the various ringsides and it wasn't because there was a shortage of good entertainment.

The shows are generally of a high order. That Bobby Whalen, star of the current Vogue Terrace show is about the greatest performer on bicycles and unicycle that has come to town. He provides plenty of thrills with his unusual stunts. And for sophisticated dance numbers the "shadow" routine of the Stanley Twins is tops. There's some clever comedy adagio work by DeMay, Moore Martin; some good funny chatter and songs by Jack Leary and Marie Kuhlman even gets of fun out of toe-dancing.

Helen Honan's impersonations complete the show. The Yacht Club has a very good and very different type of show this week. Two acts which rank high in the list of entertainment in Pittsburgh will return to the Villa Madrid tonight. They are Dorothy Ard and Earle Josephine Leach. Miss Ard is a fine singer who never bothered to count her calories and finds that a little excess weight is no handicap in her work. The Leach duo, the "Dancing Redheads" are one of the finest dance combinations ever to play here. The show also will feature Flo Miller, acrobatic dancer and Barton Brady, slick comedy act.

Jean March, a new "Personality Girl" joins the line-up at Mer-cur's Music Bar tonight. Jean comes here from Columbus to replace Lillian Morton. Miss Morton scored a tremendous hit at Al Mercur's spot and will be back as soon as she completes engagements already arranged. Mercur is holding over Randolf Garcia. Bette Smiley, Tanya Tamara, Dale Harkness and Joe Lescak.

Candy Keeps Coming Star Gains Weight HOLLYWOOD Sometimes being a movie actress isn't so bad after all. Several weeks ago Wendy Bar-rie's doctor ordered her to eat a pound of candy daily for her campaign to gain weight. A movie columnist printed the story and before the week was out. the star of "Submarine Alert" had received almost a barrel of candy from various concerns. One of the firms even offered to.

supply the actress with candy free- for the next five years if she would endorse their product. However, if candy keeps pouring in, she will already have enough candy to last her five years. CHILE now estimates its copper deposits total over 1,250,000,000 tons. Trading Skates for Wings' over by the owners of the Fort Pitt and John Wilms-Floet has been put in charge of the cuisine. John knows his sauces and such and should start the patrons talking enthusiastically.

The new management also is getting the Mayfair Roof Garden in shape for an early opening. Patrons of the Merry-Go-Round like the new show at the club on Washington Blvd. Leon Fields has some funny new gags; Hoo Shee, the Chinese swing songstress clicks with some good songs; Jose Mona present some nice dance routines and Vivien Newell does some clever acrobatic work. DeMar Denise and Lester Ohman, the man with the "human" puppets have been held over.
