June 23, 1980 Unser ends eight years of frustration 3 mm I tW, 1 1 were a pair of accidents during the early portion of the race. 1 Al Loquasto lost a wheel while speeding through the third turn on the leaders' lith lap. He spun into the Infield, while Dennis Firestone also spun and hit the wall.

Howdy Holmes lost control coming through the same turn on the 26th lap. Jim McEh-eath slowed to miss Holmes and Roger Rager plowed into the rear ot McElreath's car. There were no injuries in either accident and Holmes, who never made contact with the wall or another car, was able to continue. Two-time Pocono winner Al Unser, Bobby's younger brother, never was a factor in the race and retired early because of severe handling problems. Mike Mosley, the fastest of the four qualifiers powered by Chevrolet stock block engines, started in the second row and was ninnlng third when his engine blew, The Associated Pren LONG POND.

Pa. Relentless Bobby Unser, who had suffered nothing but frustration In eight previous tries at Pocono International Raceway, outdueled Johnny Rutherford yesterday to win the $400,000 Pocono 500 championship auto race. Unser, who has won two Indianapolis 500s and three California 500s, finally captured the third leg in championship car racing's triple crown, beating Rutherford by 21.33 seconds nearly half a lap. Tom Sneva, who was two laps down on the winner, finished third, with Bill Alsup fourth, six laps behind, and Australian Vera Schuppan fifth, seven laps down. Unser, driving a metallic blue Cosworth-powered PC-9s built and owned by Roger Penske, averaged 151.454 mph as he won his second straight champ car race.

The 46-year-old from Albuquerque, N.M., Inherited the lead when three-time Pocono twice in the race. Once for one lap when Unser pitted on lap 135, and again for five laps after a yellow light tightened up the field. But Unser never let Rutherford get tar away from him and took the lead for good as the cars approached the start-finish line on lap 164. The runnerup saw his last taint hopes of catching the leader end when his engine stalled during a pit stop on the 180th lap. Rutherford lost precious seconds as his crew was forced to give Mm a push start.

Unser was then able to make his final pit stop two laps later without losing the lead to the second-place car. It was a sweet victory for Unser, who saw Rutherford win the first two races this season, including the Indianapolis 500, in his new ground effects car. Rutherford also was the runnerup to Unser two weeks ago at Milwaukee. There winner A.J. Foyt's car succumbed to a bad valve Just before the midway point in the 200-lap race.

Foyt jumped from the middle ot the front row past polesitter Unser and into the lead on the first turn of the race. The 45-year-old Texan was still on top on the 82nd lap when a puff of smoke erupted from the rear ot his tomato-red car, drawing a mixture of cheers and groans from the crowd estimated at 100,000 persons. Foyt, the defending champion, led 71 of the first 84 laps before retiring with what, turned out to be a burned valve. Unser, several car lengths behind Foyt at that point, took over the lead and held a two-second edge over Rutherford at the halfway point ot the 500-mile race on Pocono's treacherous 2-mile tri-oval. The leader pulled steadily away, quickly building his margin to as much as 11 seconds.

A RED SOX 6, ANGELS 3 MONDAY FIRST RACE LIKEABLE was badly impeded at the start of last, then ran well, looks like string contender here. IN CLOSE QUARTERS has high speed, may forget to stop. LORETTAS BOY drops for no apparent reason, best puts him on top. SECOND RACE ADDY GIRL should stalk the pace throughout, may prevail in drive. CHING MEI has some decent races at this level, may surprise.

SWOONED is very sharp, can't ignore. THIRD RACE HYDE MISS has already taken the measure of most of these and should go well from the rail. LITTLE PISCES was just behind top one on previous occasion, be no surprise. JUST DE DUCHESS tries older for the first time, but has dangerous speed. FOURTH RACE SONORAN comes from a barn that sends the out running first time, may be dangerous.

FAST AND GOOD closed fast in last, dangerous rival.
