MAKEfRIENOS I Br JOSEPHINE REAY Highlight of their trip to Europe this summer for Esther and Louis Scherer, who arrived home Saturday, was their visit Sweden, where Esther, of Swedish descent, still has relatives. They agree with other travelers that the smartest dressed women today may be seen in Stockholm. Their stay gave Esther a chance to see the house in which her father was bom and all in all, they were captivated by the country. They left New York aboard the liner "Kungsholm" and landed at Goteborg from where they took the train to Stockholm. They also stopped over in Copenhagen, Denmark, and then went to Berlin.

Esther wasn't too comfortable with their trip into East Berlin and says it was quite an experience. "It must be seen to be believed," she says. They had five days at lovely Montreux in Switzerland, a weekend in Rome and a visit to Monte Carlo which disappointed them. They even have slot machines, says Esther, that are real relics a room filled with them. The Coney Island atmosphere around the palace with all the souvenir sales going on detracts from the beauty of the spot too, they found.

In Madrid, the next stop, the Scherers saw their first, and certainly last, bullfight. was Esther's expression of her reaction. Several days in Paris and then over to London completed the trip. They made the trip home by plane and are still trying to get back on schedule after being up 22 hours! A thrill awaits young Susie and Rick Marsh who will accompany their parents, Richard and Helen, to Europe later this month. TTie laTnjXy lives in Pasadena, but spend much time in Redlands with Richard's parents, the Howard R.

Marshes. The Marsh foursome, leavmg little Kirby and baby Stephen behind, will leave August 22, the main purpose of the trip being the Gth General Assembly, International Congress and Symposia for the Interantional Union of Crystallography which convenes September 9-18 in Rome. Richard, who is on the faculty at Cal Tech, is scheduled to make an address during this time. Don't know what it all means, but his topic is "Structure Refinement, 1963" (with special reference to organic compounds.) Lectures will be presented in English with summaries available in English, French, German, Italian and Russian. This is the business portion of the trip which will also include the pleasure of seeing the sights of the Continent for the family.

daughter and grandchildren to have a visit in Redlands. Mrs. Key was also appointed keeper of the bird on the return trip. Stopping in Denver for a visit with relatives, birdie's recently gained beauty was marred by the little Pekinese dog of the household who spied the handsome long tail sticking out of the cage and removed most of its feathers. It won't be long now before the mocking bird kingdom will reclaun one of its own, but we just wonder if this soft life he's been leading will be given up without a struggle! Emir (Mrs.

Tom) Ditchfield, who was seriously injured some weeks ago in a fall into a glass shower door when her left arm was badly mangled, is doing fine now and is grateful her injury, bad as it was, wasn't worse. She's so grateful for the many cards and notes she received after the accident, but is also worried about how she is ever going to answer them. It's practically an impossible job, and she hopes they will understand. Emir, organist at Sacred Heart church, even managed to play the organ at the 9:15 Mass last Sunday with one hand. "I just pulled out all the stops and didn't try anything she laughs and the congregation sang right along.

mSS JOSEPHINE REAY Society Editor POLLY'S POINTERS By Polly One way to flatter a male: ask his advice. This has been quite a summer for the Jerry Ayers family who have just moved into their new home on Valencia drive. Wife Nell and children Valerie and Houston had an unexpected hitch hiker" on their trip to Mississippi from where they just recently returned. A few days before they left, they adopted a tiny mocking bird, fallen from its nest and only a few days old all mouth and no says Nell. It survived, under tender loving care for the next few days, and the children just couldn't leave it behind.

So, in a shoe- box filled with tissues, it accompanied the family across the country. A can of worms, milk and oatmeal went along too for frequent feedings with medicine dropper. Within the next weeks, with many narrow escapes with dogs and cats, the bird graduated first to a lizard cage and then to bird cage. It thrived and began to look quite handsome with a beautiful long tail, according to Nell, whose mother, Jlrs. Evelyn Key, returned from Mississippi with her doesitwatfcr It certainly does.

Downtown Ridlonds DEAR POLLY I have discovered that if you are reusing a zipper saved from a woruout garment, it will sew in like a new one after a dip in hot starch. Iron while still damp, using a cloth over it. L. M. SIRLS If you havt nothing to ttirch, I am you would not want to make hot starch for one littio zipper.

I found that spray starch works just fine. Iron dry in the same manner as suggested by and the zipper tapes will have as much body as when new. -POLLY DEAR POLLY When we bought our chest-type freezer, it was put in the basement near my automatic washer and dryer. At the time, I had no idea the freezer was going to be such a laundry aid. The big porcelain top is ideal for starching clothes, dampening the ironing, folding things that come out of the dryer, sorting the ironed clothes and so on.

The unfinished dampened things can be stored inside. This accidental placement of the freezer has saved me countless steps up and down the basement stairs. I heartily recommend that anyone with a chest freezer move it to the laundry area. Mrs. M.F.F.

DEAR POLLY When giving a small child's birthday party at home, place a 9 by 12 plastic drop cloth on the floor or rug under the party table and chairs. This will save your rug or floor when the children accidentally spill food or drink or have any of the usual children's accidents. When the party is over, roll up the drop cloth and throw it away if you like. They can be purchased at most paint or hardware stores for a small sum and are certainly worth the price as a rug pro lector and time saver. Mrs E.H.

Cathedral Glass Now Specialty Of Former Woman Potter In New York DEAR POLLY I always drop a square of nylon netting in my mop water when scrubbmg the fioor. I can remove shoe marks and scuffs easily by rubbing with the netting.

It does not scratch the floor. Mrs. V.K. DEAR many things we buy come in plastic bags. I find that after ironing my pillow slips they can easily be kept in pairs by inserting them in some of these bags.

At the same time they are saved from discoloring in my linen closet This also holds true with sheets. -E. F. R. GIRLS This might be toe much of a good thing for those with big families, where the bed linens scarecely have time to cool en the shelves.

It would certainly be wonderful for company-best Moving Fish A strange fish in Africa and Asia, the climbing perch, has special cavities over the gills which enable the fish to breathe air and these fish use their gill covers as crutches to hobble about By CAY PAULEY UPI Women's Editor WASHINGTON, N. J. (UPI)Dorothy A. Larson has carved her way to a rare career in glass artistry. She also concedes that she's carved up quite a bit of Larson fingers along the way.

Miss Larson, a former potter, now fuses cathedral stained glass of the type used in clear glass layer on layer with other materials to create decorative murals, room dividers, book ends, table tops, cigarette boxes, ash trays, wall plaques, and other items. She designs right from the glass, without benefit of sketching in advance, and uses the conventional tools sold at hardware stores to do the cutting. 'I'm a walking ad for adhesive bandages," she said, in an inter view, explaining that cutting had its hazards. Fusing is done in four electrically heated kilns at temperatures well over 1,000 degrees fahren- heit Some of Miss Larson's glass went into the lightmg decor for the cafe of the Lincoln Center Philharmonic Hall, New York. Other glass is in museums, or decorating offices, hotels, motels, restaurants, show rooms, and homes where the owners have discovered her work in retail shops or through decorators.

Six -Month Project The Lincoln Center project was one of the largest commissions this native of Madison, Wise, has had. It was for 190 reflectors, each eight inches in diameter, done in yellow and amber to match the color scheme of the upholstery, gold carpet, gold swizzle sticks. The project took six months. Miss Larson, in private life Mrs. Bruce Hotchkiss.

wife of a newspaperman, said she is one of the handful of artists in the United States who work in stained glass. But she beheves the tech nique she has developed is unique. It also is top secret. The artist produces numerous design effects by working beads, wire, even leaves and flowers between the layers. She never is at loss for color are more than 100 colors of cathedral glass," she said.

Her supply comes from a wholesale firm in New York. The blonde haired artist was bom on the campus of the University of Wisconsin where her father was a professor of engineering. She studied for two years on a scholarship in fme arts at Mills College, Oakland, where one of her professors was the now Secretary of State, Dean Rusk. She holds a bachelor of science degree in art from the University of Wisconsin, is a graduate of the industrial design department of Pratt Institute, New York, and studied for one year at Greenwich House Pottery School, New York. Unique Factory For 10 years she did ceramics and jewelry, but for the last five has worked only in glass.

She said her husband, who is president and assistant editor of the Hunterdon (County) Review, bosses the packing, shipping and billing from the factory, which is unorthodox as factories go. A barn and one house on a 10- acre plot 50 miles west of New York city are the locale. The couple lives in the third a residence dating to 1710. Many of Miss Larson's designs are assembled into large murals- two of them, 10 feet tall showing the New York skyline and the George Washington Bridge hang in the banquet rooms of one of Manhattan's new hotels. Smaller panels for wall hangings are mounted on walnut or black lacquered wood with a white felt backing on the glass to show the colors better.

Still others are mounted on woods to make book ends, cigarette cases, table tops.
