Obituaries For service times and other details, see Services listing i Deaths Alfred O.C. Nier, 82, developed atomic bomb Charles Applegate, was Keyport mayor vvc, head of the university's physics department, said he will see that Nier's NASA-funded work is completed. Working with a mass spectrometer, an instrument used to weigh and sort atoms, Nier in 1938 measured the various isotopes or atomic forms of lead. The results allowed a determination of the age of the Earth at about 5 billion years. In 1940, at the request of physicist Enrico Fermi, Nier used a mass spectrometer in his basement workshop at the University of Minnesota to identify uranium-235 as the type of uranium that could sustain slow-neutron fission.

The results helped lead to the development of the atomic bomb. Nier, who went to work in 1943 in Oak Ridge, on the Manhattan Project to develop the bomb, described his experiment only by saying: "It took some skill." THE ASSOCIATED PRESS MINNEAPOLIS Physicist Alfred O.C. Nier, who died Monday at the age of 82, said he never regretted his role in developing the atomic bomb. "There was war in Japan and American boys were dying," he said three years ago. "We didn't know the casualties involved in taking Japan, but we knew they would be terrifically high, and this was a quick way of ending the war. How could you ever justify to the families of the soldiers who were over there not using a weapon that could end the war?" Nier died two weeks after he lost control of his car and hit a tree on his way home from work at the University of Minnesota.

He was paralyzed from the neck down after the accident and could communicate only by blinking.
