LINES BEFORECANTON Prepare to Attack Foes In Captured Southern Metropolis By The United Pre-g HONGKONG. Nov. 17 Chinese today said their columns ere closing in on Canton after shattering: the outer Japanese defenses. Chinese sources said their troop; 'ere preparing to storm the battered commercial center of Southern China, which the Japanese captured almost without resistance. They sajd the mam Japanese forces had retreated toward Canton from various directions and were awajting reinforcements to defend the city.

Other Troops Advance Chinese columns, they said. hd mopped up the remnants of the Japanese defence at Fafshan. 11 miles south of Canton, and had reached Shekwaitong. the eastern terminus of the Canton Samshui Kailwav on the south bank of the Pearl River. Meanwhile, another Chinese column moved along the Hankow Railway and reached Siupir.g.

seven miles from Canton. Japanese troops repeatedly at-tmped to recapture Tamshui where the Chinese interrupted communications with Eias Bay. More than 40 Japanese warship and transports were reported rushing reir.forcemens to Canton. Bishop's Son Attacked Meantime, advice? from Hankow corrected yesterday reports that an American attacked in Wuchang by Japanese soldi-rrs was Bishop Logan Roots, e.eran American rrussionarv Central China. The Logan Roots involved was Dr.

Losan Roots, a son of the bishop. The bisfcon was said to have left Hankow some time ago and to be now in London. Dr. Roots, at whom Japanese soldiers threw a battle of carbour acid when the American attempted to prevent the eviction of Chinese at Wuchang, was not injured. MRS.

MELLON BURIAL SIMPLE Public Admitted to Funeral Services at Church Simple but impressive funeral services vere held today for Mrs. Jenni King Mellon, widow of the late Richard E. Mellon. The family, and anyone who wished to attend, gathered at the Mellon home. 6500 Fifth Ave.

at 2:30 p. m. The service was conducted by Dr. Stuart Nye Hutchison, pastor of the East Liberty Presbyterian Church, of which Mrs'. Mellon was an active member.

She and her husband gave the congregation its present monumental building. The burial service, at Allechenv Cemetery, was private. No list of honorary pallbearers was selected, as '-as done at her husband's funeral and that of her brother-in-law, Andrew W. Mellon. The services were in keeping with the life she had led quiet and unobtrusive.

Since she never turned anyone away from her door while she was living during the depression, she maintained a small cafeteria in the rear of her home for unfortunate callers the public was not barred from her funeral. Mrs. Mellon died rvnpumnni.i after a Tuesday of short illness She had been active in charitable affairs until a few weeks before her death. At her bedside were her son, Richard King Mellon, president of the Mellon National Bank; her daughter, Mrs. Alan Macee Scaife, and other close relatives.

CITY NURSES CITED BY STATE GROUP Citv Council was informed by the Pennsylvania Nurses Assn. that unregistered nurses were being employed in two city hospitals. The charges were made by Mary E. Walton, "district director for the association, after a year's study by a committee working for the association. The study, she said, had not revealed the exact number of unregistered nurses in city-operated institutions, but did show they were being emploved at both Municipal andLeach Farm Hospitals.

She was asked to complete her survey and report full findings to Council later. Informed of the charges. Health Director I. Hope Alexander said, "Unless our nurses forged their registrations, thee people are mis-informed." He said that every nurse at Municipal Hospital was a graduate nurse who had passed board examinations at Harnsburg. and that all at Leech Farm were registered except two.
