The Pittsburgh Press, Sunday, Feb. 25, 1973 J3.3 Stealers Nardi Do Time Willing To Shipshape them have made the team. "Well. I'm not going to be Seminole defense star that Noll has an excellent track record as far as first-round choices are concerned. All of that ties, the coaches.

"Now all I have to do is make sure I come back here in September." It was pointed out to the the one who changes trend," said Thomas. (SedGM? Glen Nardi, the U. S. Naval Academy's All-East tackle, will petition the Navy to assign him to reserve duty so he may continue his football career with the Steelers. Nardi, a 6-5, 235-pound defensive lineman, was one of 20 Steeler draftees who participated in an orientation session at Three Rivers Stadium yesterday.

Admitting that approval would be a precedent-shatter-move by the Bureau of Naval Personnel, Nardi insisted it would not set a precedent in the U.S. Armed Forces. "An Ail-American from the Air Force Academy, a split end named Ernie Jennings, was allowed to do it, to play with the 49ers," said Nardi. "They put him in the reserve for 12 years." The Midshipman was asked if he would agree to spend 12 years in the reserve in exchange for an opportunity to play with the pros. "I'd serve 20 years," said he.

"I really want to play pro ball." A 16th round pick by the Steelers, Nardi was chosen by Coach Chuck Noll strictly as a calculated risk. "If he doesn't play, what have we lost?" asked Noll at that time. "If he does, he's a great 16th round ate," he explained. He said he had no commitments from anyone in the Naval heirarchy that his request will be granted. One of the recruits, Running Back Ron Bell of Indiana State, declined to participate in the weight program.

He watched in street clothing as the others struggled with the lift apparatus. Bell would not explain why he acted as he did. Steeler officials did not appear concerned about the behavior of the 223-pound running back. "My guess is that his agent instructed him not to compete choice." The Navy lineman said he has made no formal request of the Navy yet, explaining that athletic department officials, who would act in his behalf, have been tied up by a search for a new coach. His argument, he said, will be that, approval by the Navy would help recruiting at the service schools.

Graduates of the Naval Academy commit themselves to five years of post graduate active duty. "Navy is losing a lot of good football players because high school kids know they can't play pro ball after they gradu Cement Softener For the man who needs more ankle VvJ'lfEeJitVt. vi-' protection in anything," surmised Art Rooney vice-president in charge of personnel. Before reporting, the players had been advised there would be no competitive workouts. The weight-lifting drills were set up to explain the program the players are expected to follow between now and the opening of training camp.

From a physical standpoint, the 1973 crop appears taller than Noll's previous recruits. Nardi, Mike Shannon, a 17th round pick from Oregon State; Roger Cowan, a Thunder-Chicken from Stanford who was drafted on the 14th round; and the fifth-round choice, Dave Reavis of Arkansas, measured in at 6-5 or better. "Are they taller?" asked Noll. "I didn't notice that. If they are, it was strictly unintentional." Physically, Reavis (6-5, 250) is the biggest player in the group.

James (Jay Tee) Thomas, the No. 1 choice, is going to be a popular Steeler. Articulate and effervescent, the Florida State back has an out-going personality that reminds one of Frenchy Fuqua. "This is going to be great," bubbled Thomas. "It's been a great weekend in a great town.
