In it, the actor is up to his old skulduggeries dyed -in-the-wool villian again.

As the oil promoter without scruples, Arnold is seen in the lusty, blustering type of role which first won him fame in Hollywood. What did you think I did with it?" Speaking of stature, as we were a couple of paragraphs back, that's one Cooper legend that isnt in the least exaggerated. When he first came over to where I sat in one of the set camp chairs, I looked up to say hello, but before my eyes reached his face my head was practically falling back off my shoulders. With the high heels of his Western boots and the height of his cowboy hat, the rangy Mon- tanan comes mighty close to the seven-foot mark.

Cowboy Again Everybody's glad to see Coop back in cowboy clothes. On him they really look good. And since he's now a producer for International Pictures, as well as a star, he's seeing to it that his Western sticks to the facts. Having grown up in cowboy country, Coop knows what makes 'em tick. Therefore, there's nothing fancy about his outfit.

By comparison with his reputation, he's positively garrulous. During set breaks on his new picture, "Along Came Jones," Coop you find your self calling him that within two Miss Garrison minutes of meeting him touched on the ardors of being a combination star and producer, described wild rides with police escorts in New York and Chicago, demonstrated how tooll cigarets with a running commentary on the easiness of it, praised Bob Hope and Bing Crosby for their human as well as professional qualities, and spoke earnestly of our fighting men as he saw them on a USO trip to the South Pacific. He displayed, what's more, a sense of humor which all too often escapes those who've attained the professional stature he has.

I haven't seen it, but I'm told that after magazine critics got a load of "National Velvet" they cheered. I'm not surprised, nor am I surprised that the star is little Elizabeth Taylor.

The story of how she came there is interesting. YouH hear many versions. Here's the real lowdown: Some years ago, she was taken to Metro. It couldn't make up its mind. She was intro duced by Cheever Cowdin to Uni versaL and it signed her.

That angered Metro. It seemed to anger Universal, too. Because she was picked by a top executive, she got nothing to do. Her option was left lying. Then those of us who knew her started working.

The difficult thine was to overcome Metro's prejudice, which is ticklish, always Over there they still remember how they lost Deanna Durbin. Just about the time we were putting our plan into action, Elizabeth's father was walking his beat as an air raid warden in Beverly Hills with two other guys. One of them said, "I'm going mad. I've got a kid in 'Lassie1 but she isn't what I want. I just don't know where to look for the right type." Other guy said, "Well Taylor here has a daughter that's out of this world," and described her.

First man who spoke was Sam Marx, Metro producer, who said to Taylor, "Will you bring her to the studio tomorrow?" She was brought, she played in "Lassie." Then they thought of her for "Velvet" but she was too little and too young. So for two years they've let her grow into the part. In the meantime she learned to ride, fell in love with the horse, everybody fell in love with her. She didn't play "Velvet" she lived "Velvet." And her mother played the crippled eirl in Channine Pollock's play, Fool," many years ago. Bob Sully signed with Hal Wal us.

Pat Knowles helped me carry my groceries. Tells me ne signed a termer with Paramount.

And Melody Jones, far from being a rootin'-tootin', guitar-totin" drug- store cowboy is a genuine, ordinary cow-waddie (in 1885, the time of the picture, that amounted to an itinerant farm hand, no more, no less). Slow on Trigger As for gunplay, Coop says that most of the cow-waddies were peaceable citizens. Inclined to eive a wide berth to the boys who were quick on the trigger, because they dtdn't want trouble, no matter what we've been led to believe. So Melody isn't only slow on the trigger, he's downright clumsy.

Which makes it tough for him when he's mistaken for a notorious bandit. Makes it tough for Cooper other ways, too. Guns happen to be his hobby, and he's handy with about any kind you can name. He has to! work hard to pretend to be clumsy. I assed ninvif the pro- aucer, naa any wouoie wun uooper, the star.
