They're fun to make too. This recipe give directions for the pastry, but if you prefer to use a pastry mix and add the cheese, go ahead. It will work out fine. The rest is simple, too . . . canned apple slices are available in any grocery store, all ready to use without any bother of peeling, coring or slicing. Apple Cheesettes 2 cups sifted all-purpose flour Vi teaspoon salt Vis teaspoon baking powder 2-3 cup shortening 2-3 cup grated American died-- dar cheese 3 A tablespoon ice water 2 x h cups (1 can) sliced apples 1 tablespoon grated orange rind 3 dozen pecans or walnuts Brown sugar Sift together flour, salt and baking powder; cut in shortening with knives or pastry blender. Add cheese; mix well. Add enough water to hold ingredients together. APPLE CHEESETTES ... Finger pick-up bites, sharp and zesty Chill. Drain liquid from canned apples; add rind; mix well. Roll out pastry to-Vfc" thickness; cut with 3" round cutter. Place apple slice on one-half of circle of pastry; add walnut Or pecan, and sprinkle lightly 'With sugar. Moisten edges of pastry; fold over; press edges together. Flute with pastry wheel. Pierce with fork or make gash in center of each. Place on baking sheet; bake in hot oven, 425 degrees F., 10-15 minutes. Yields 3 dozen. (This is an original recipe kitchen tested by Gertrude Lynn, nationally known Home Economist.) Arrange slices of tomato on rounds of toast; sprinkle with grated Cheddar cheese and broil just until the cheese is melted. Serve at once.
