THE FRANK PAXSTON OBSERVE 60th WEDDING ANN. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Paxston observed their 60th wedding anniversary Sunday with open house from 2 to 5 p.m. More than 80 persons signed the guest book.

A family dinner was held at the Continental hotel in Centerville with thirty present including the honored couple, their five children and several grandchildren. They received many lovely gifts and greetings, The table was covered with a silk cloth brought to them from their grandson Billy Paxton from China. In the center was a three tiered wedding cake, iced in white with white and dark yellow rosebud confections. The bride of 60 years was wearing a blue dacron flowered dress and corsage and Mr. Paxston was wearing a light grey suit with a carnation boutonniere.

The children present were Mr. and Mrs. Henry Simmons of Tracy, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Paxton and four daughters of Kansas City, Mr.

and Mrs. Versal Paxston of Bettendorf, Clifford Moravia and Mr. and Mrs. Truman Paxston, Paxton and daughter of Milwaukee, Wis. Among the grandchildren here from a distance were Donald Paxston, Mrs.

Lynn Sweeden' and children of Denver, William Paxton of Davenport, Mr. Mrs. Edd Heinmann and Eddie and Dianne of Davenport, Mr. and Mrs. George Simmons of Tracy, Albert, Allene and Alinda Coe, of Silvis, Mr.

and Mrs. Boyd Paxston, of Moravia, others registered from Rockford, Russell, Moulton, Albia, Udell, Centerville, Tracy and Moravia. FAMILY DINNER HONORS MRS. 0. G.

WOODWARD Mr. and Mrs. William Woodward entertained at a dinner Sunday honoring the 88th birthday anniversary of his mother, Mrs. O. G.

Woodward, and their son, Gordon, who has enlisted in the air force and left Monday for basic training in Texas. Mrs. Woodward baked the lovely birthday cake and there was a cooperative dinner at the noon hour. All Mrs. Woodward's sons were present but Leslie who lives at Kingsley and who called his mother via telephone.

Those present beside the honorees were: Mr. and Mrs. Harry Woodward, Mr. and Mrs. Harley Woodward and Lois, Mr.

and Mrs. George Murty of Marshalltown, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Woodward and children, Donna Woodward, Mr. and Mrs.

Jerry Woodward and children, Mrs. Verne Funkhouser, Torrington, Mrs. Will Thadden of Hasting, Mr. and Mrs. Gaylord Main and Joanne, Mr.

and Mrs. Noah Stocker of Blakesburg, Mrs. Carrie Boyer and Mr. and Mrs. Fredrick Koehler of Udell.

Mrs. Woodward received many gifts and greetings for her anniversary. HARVEY TUTTLE, 95 DIES IN OREGON Word has been received here of the death of Harvey Tuttle, 95, at the home of his son, Ralph in Medford, Oregon. He was born Nov. 11, 1864, the son of Parmenas and Elizabeth Tuttle in Moravia.

He had spent much of his life here, on a farm north of Moravia. PICNIC TO HONOR WORTHINGTON FAMILIES A cooperative picnic dinner will be held at Centerville Community building, Sunday, Sept. 9, 1960 in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Rolla Worthington, Mr.

and Mrs. Ivan Worthington of Anaheims, Calif. and Mrs. Wm. Worthington of Hastings, Nebr.

All the relatives are cordially invited to attend. A Subscription to the Union Brings You All The Local News VOLUME 59 Band Gets First At Lancaster Moravia's school took top honors at the band festival held in conjunction with the Old Settlers celebration at Lancaster, Saturday. They came home cheering, displaying their first place trophy and $100 cash award. There were six bands in the competition, with LaPlata, band taking second place and Stockport third. S.C.A.

MEETS AT THE NEW SCHOOLHOUSE The first meeting of the S.C.A. met Monday, Sept. 26 at the new high school gym. Mrs. Wm.

Woodward called the meeting to order. Rev. Smith gave the invocation. Mrs. Brooks read the minutes of the May meeting, also of the executive boards meeting.

Announcement was made through these minutes of nominating committee who were appointed at the executive meeting. Those appointed were: Mrs. Joe Wilson, Mrs. Leslie Deedrick, and Whitehead. Mrs.

Woodward welcomed all people to the S.C.A. meeting and stated that only dues paying members have the right to vote. At the time of Executive Board meeting, Supt. Burton suggested a salary Schedule Committee be appointed. Mr.

Burton was called on to explain salary schedules and stated 2 teachers, 2 school board members will be chosen, and the S.C.A. elected 2 members to serve on this committee, they being Mrs. Ralph Davis and Mrs. Kenneth Daniels. Supt.

Burton was then introduced and he in turn introduced' all the teachers. Dean Newsham of Centerville gave a talk on College requirements. His main thought being "the formation of good study A panel discussion on homework was moderated by Mrs. Daniels. Mr.

Dayton and Mrs. Clayworth representing the teachers and Mrs. Laverne Smith, and Mrs. Harry Phillips representing parents. RAND MOTHERS WILL MEET WEDNESDAY Bands Mothers club will meet the new high school building Oct.

at 5, 2:00 o'clock. All band mothers and junior band mothers are invited. Refreshment committee is Helen Tadlock, chairman; Betty Strunk, Mrs. Kenneth Doud and Marion Woodward. LOCAL NEWS Sunday dinner guests at the Vess Hiatt home were Mr.

Boyd Chedister and Mr. and Mrs. Dick Chedister and children called at the Clarence Dowd home Sunday afternono. Mrs. Jennie Campbell, visited last week with her niece, who Mrs.

Beryl Brown, died Monday, Sept, 26 at the Ottumwa Hotel. Mrs. Icel Sulzer of Melrose and Mrs. Flossie Walker of Mystic visited Tuesday with their aunt, Mrs. Ann Kaster.

Richard Gordner of Yakima, Washington was a Moravia visitor Monday calling on friends and renewing acquainances. Mrs. Pearl Swaim was among those from Moravia attending the Union Chapel homecoming, Sunday. Mrs. Zelma Hopkins and Mrs.

Grace Ahee of Albia were luncheon guests of Mrs. Swaim Sunday evening following the afternoon program. L. WALKER CONFINED TO WHEEL CHAIR Lawrence Walker, 15, twin son of Mrs. Leona Cousins is confined to a wheel chair at his home after undergoing surgery at the Monroe county hospital.

He broke his leg at school Sept. 9. This is the second break for his leg, also suffering a similar injury Oct. 31. He is recovering nicely but will be confined to the wheel chair for about two months.

SHOWER HONORS MRS. GARY DHORITY A layette shower honoring Mrs. Gary Dhority was held Tuesday afternoon at the home of Mrs. ladies of the Baptist church. Russell Swift in Unionville by the Several games were played, after which Mrs.

Dhority opened and displayed the useful lovely gifts. Refreshments were served at the close of the afternoon. Those unable to attend sent gifts. NEW STREET LIGHTS AT HIGH SCHOOL AREA New street lights have been installed along the roads to the new high school, and were expected to be turned on for the first time Wednesday evening. Installed were two new 8,000 lumens lights, one at the road into the new building and one at the road from the school.

These are the largest lights in the town and is expected to light the area very well. Also the lights at the Art Fox corner and at the M. K. Blackman corner was increased from 1,000 lumens to 4,000 lumens. SELL IT with WANT ADS Juniors to Present Play Written by Local Minister; Cast Is Chosen Rites Tuesday For Carrie Tisue, 74 Mary Caroline Newman, daughter of Aaron and Mahala Baldwin Newman, was born June 13, 1886, two and one-half miles north-east of Moravia, in Monroe county. She suffered a stroke at 11:00 p.m. last Saturday night, and passed away at 4:00 a.m. on Sunday at the Mercy hospital in Oelwein, Iowa, Carrie, as she was known by all her friends and neighbors, had lived in and around Moravia most of her life.

At an early age she became a member of the United Brethren Church in Christ, and was an active member of the Church and a steward of God's kingdom as long as life and health permitted. In 1909 she was united in marriage to Mr. Harry D. Tisue, who passed away in 1946. To this union was born seven children: Mrs.

Claude Hawk of Moravia; Mrs. Alfred Sutton of Waterloo; Mrs. Warren Rouse of Albia; Mr. Rex Tisue of Sumner; Mrs. Van Spears of Lovilia; Mr.

Harry D. Tisue, Jr. of Waterloo; and Mr. Harold Tisue of Westgate; all of whom still survive. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, four sisters, two brothers and one grandchild.

Surviving besides her seven children are: one sister, Mrs. Jennie Puffer of Hitchcock, South Dakota, 19 grandchildren, 8 greatgrandchildren, and a great host of friends who mourn her but rejoice in her victory over the passing, world and death to enter into that glorious state of eternal life with God the Father Almighty. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the E.U.B. church with Rev.

Madames Lester Brain, Burton, Clifford Paxston and Gerald Morgan attended the fail meeting of the 5th district American Legian auxiliary, held Monday at Brooklyn. Mr. and Mrs. Jonothan Chase and Nancy of Russell were guests Sunday wih the Clarence Johnsons. Miss Madge Hough of Mt.

Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Burton and Iva Strunk attended open house at the Frank Paxston home in Moravia Sunday. Our best wishes to Martha and Frank who lived in our community for number of years. Number Practice for the annual junior class play is now under way.

The play and characters have been by the sponsor, a Mr. Van selected Gilder. Those who chosen for the cast are: Clarence Ballanger, Jay Clayworth, Fred Strong, Steve Tarbell, Janet Harrington, Martha Rouse, Nellie Argo, Joyce Kincade, and Judy Van Dorin. The Rev. Donald Plum of Albia is the author of the play, "Absent Minded Father." The Rev.

Mr. Plum has written this play for a hobby. It was first presented as a one act play, until he later wrote two more acts. He has always lived around or near Albia, Iowa. Presently he is a rural mail carrier.

A Law Degree was obtained by the Rev. Mr. Plum from study in Chicago, However, the rest of his college days were taken through a correspondence course. The Rev. Donald Plum is a veteran of World War II and since then he and his wife have lived in Albia.

For the past five years he has been the pastor of the Moravia Christian church. To enjoy a play written by local talent, plan to attend this play. Judy VanDorin DISTRICT BASEBALL GAMES HELD HERE Diagonal was winner of the first round of the district fall baseball tournament here Tuesday, defeating Blakesburg 4-0. Ed Hutchinson for Diagonal pitched a no-hitter for Diagonal, and struck out 13 men. Blakesburg had advanced to the district play by defeating Fremont here in the finals of the sectional Thursday 5-4.

Blakesburg had trailed throughout the game, with score of 4-2 in seventh inning when they ran across three runs with a squeeze play at home, winning 5-4. Diagonal will now meet Burlington in next game of district, location yet to be announced. Burlington advanced in the district play defeating Keosauqua at Burlington Tuesday. NORMA GLADFELDER RAINBOW WORTHY ADVISOR Norma Gladfelder, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.

Keith Gladfelder, was installed worthy advisor of the Rainbow for Girls at the Masonic Hall Sunday afternoon. She succeeds Judy Gladfelder. The installing officers were Mary DuVall, Marshal; Mrs. Paul Dicks, chaplain; Nellie Argo, recorder; Nancy Benz soloist and Virginia Burger musician. Pam and Joel Gladfelder lighted the candles and Dianne Gladfelder presented Norma with her flowers.

Others installed were lor, worthy associate advisor; Jo Jean TayDuVall, charity; Donna Tomlin, hope; Connie Boblenz, faith; Janice McDonough, chaplain; Joyce Kindrill cade, treasurer; Dianne Kincade, leader; Nellie Argo, recorder; Judy VanDorin, love; Nancy Tomlin, religion; Mary DuVall, nature; Sharon Argo, fidelity; Carolyn VerSteeg, confidential observer and Judy Gladfelder, musician. Norma and her cousin Judy Gladfelder presided at the table. REBEKAH LODGES MEETS MONDAY EVENING Monday evening, the Moravia Rebekah lodge met for their lar meeting with Helen Lou reguStock- er acting noble grand. and Mrs. Kenneth Gladfelder, Betty Main, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elec Main. POSTOFFICE JOB NEARS COMPLETION Postmaster Don Pettibone reports receipt of notice that most of the furnishings for the new postoffice building has been shipped and is expected here very soon.

Postal inspectors week have made recommendations for further requests of work for the contractors, and it is expected as soon as these requests have met the furnishing will be installed and orcupation date set. GAR CONSTRUCTION HERE PROGRESSING Contractors were progressing with the installation of natural gas services into homes here this week. It is estimated that a little over half of the services are now run. Main line construction crews have the about completed construction of main line to the sub station east of town. Iowa Southern Utilities expects to have gas operating in the mains here next week.

W.8.C.8. OBSERVES 20th ANNIVERSARY The 20th anniversary of the Womans Society of Christian Service was observed at the Grace Methodist church parlors Wednesday, September 21 with a number of guests present. A coffee dessert at 1:15 was served with Mrs. Clarence Johnson and Mrs. Anna Smith hostesses assisted by Mrs.

Lester Brain. Mrs. Clarence Dowd gave a review of the opening chapters of our new study "One World One Mission." Mrs. Leonard Palmer was devotion and program leader, assisted by Mesdames N. R.

Ward, Clarence Whitehead, and Lee Hiatt. A panel discussion was held on the "Purpose of the Woman's Society of Christian Service." The spiritual leader, Mrs. D. E. Bishop gave the meditation followed by a resume of the organization since the Home and Foreign Missionary societies, and the Ladies Aid." Names of the seventy charter members were read.

There has been ten presidents, seven of whom were present, the first one being, Mrs. Rowena McFatridge. Others were Mrs. D. E.

Bishop, Mrs. Frank Wilson, Mrs. Lester Brain, Mrs. Ralph McDonough, Mrs. Lula R.

Tillmont, and the present incumbent Mrs. John Veach. The meeting closed with singing one stanza of "Blest Be the Tie that MEMORIAM In memory of our beloved mother and wife, Ruth Van Dorin, who left us one year ago, Oct. 1, 1959. The tank of water has been sterilized, it will now be drained into the water mains in order to sterilize the lines. The tank will then be flushed and filled with water, which is expected to be pure and pass the state tests. GILMOUR CAMPAIGNS IN THIS AREA Ed Gilmour of Grinnell, Democratic candidate for congressman from Iowa's fourth district, is taking his campaign into Appanoose county and Moravia this week. His two-day visit, this Wednesday and Thursday, will involve visits to all 28 voting precincts in the county. He will stop in Moulton to talk over the issues with businessmen and shoppers in the husiness district.

He will also visit Centerville, Mystic, Rathbun, Plano, Numa, Cincinnati, Iconium, Darby, Unionville, Udell, Exline, Moulton and Dean. FORMER UNIONVILLE PASTOR'S ANNIVERSARY Rev. and Mrs. Christian Kochner, former pastor of the Unionville Methodist church, observed their 25th wedding anniversary recently at their church at Michigan City, where he is now pastor. He has served at Albany, New Paris, Sheridan, Elkhart and Fort Wayne, all in Indiana.

They have four children. OARD OF THANKS We wish to thank all our friends, neighbors and relatives for the many nice gifts, cards, and flowers we received on our 60th wedding anniversary. Also thanks to our children and grandchildren for the wonderful dinner at the Continental hotel in Centerville. Your thoughtfulness was deeply appreciated and will never be forgotten.
