H T THE SALINA JOURNAL T RECEPTION TUNE Song puts groom at center stage Lyrics tout traditional values mothers want sons to marry with By SHERIDA WARNER The Satina Journal "Be kind, be sweet, be a gentle man. Care and share and always be fair, and remember though you have taken a wife, you will always be my son, my loving son." These sentimental words are the chorus to "A Song for My Son," written specifically for the celebratory dance between a bridegroom and his mother. These two people often are left behind during marriage preparations, and What's more, the bride and her father usually share a reception dance to the well-known tune of "Daddy's Little Girl." Begin the drying process right away, before you leave for the honeymoon. Turn the bouquet upside down and hang it in a dark, dry place. In two weeks it should be completely dry and ready to decorate a wall or shelf. After 20 years of singing at wedding receptions, Mikki Viereck of East Longmeadow, Mass., decided it was time to fill that mother-son void. She herself is a mother of two boys, neither one yet married. Viereck sat at her kitchen table one day in 1991, wrote the lyrics to "A Song for My Son" and asked her musician friends to put them to a catchy tune. The finished product is a ballad in waltz time, describing traditional values that mothers try to instill in their sons and how they want them to carry on throughout their lifetimes. Apparently, many mothers of sons were more than appreciative of such a tribute. Viereck has sold more than 100,000 copies of the song and enlarged her business which she calls New Traditions. "The song describes exactly what I would say to my sons when they get married," said Viereck during a telephone interview. "No matter how old See me for Life, Health, Home, Auto or Renter's Insurance Norm Pihl 1400-B S. I will just have more to love because I will have a new daughter-in-law." Viereck said she is touched by the letters she receives from grateful mothers. One from Moberly, Mo., wrote: "My daughter-in-law surprised both my son and myself by playing 'A Song for My Son' at their wedding reception. That song caused more tears of joy than any song up to that time. It told of mothers' hopes and dreams better than I could ever have told my son. Thank you for making his day so special for both of us." Since then, Viereck has written two new songs, "One More Time," an alternative to "Daddy's Little Girl," and "A Wedding Thank You" for the family or friends of the couple. She sells compact discs ($9,) cassette tapes ($7) and sheet music ($6) of "A Song for My Son." To order, call 800-4476647. The GROOM goes FREE during our Early Booking Wedding Special!
