"I'm out here in outer space I" Detectives guard witnesses in bookie case LOS ANGELES (UPD—Detec­ tives today guai-ded two secret witnessees whose testimony before a federal grand jury helped smash an alleged $1 billion-a-year nationwide bookmaking operation with headquarters in Boston. Police said the two witnesses were being guarded to prevent a possible attempt at revenge for the testimony which proved the basis for part of indictments on bookmaking and conspiracy charges against 29 persons. Most of those indicted have surrendered and have been arraigned and released on $1,000 bail each pending their return Aug. 14 to enter please. Those indicted included Sol Gershenhorn, alias Sol Green, 45, Los Angeles, described by police as the ring's oddsmaker. He is free on S30,000 bail. Also indicted was T. Todd (Sugar) Brown, 53, Long Beach, who authorities claimed was the kingpin of the local ring's operations. He is free on $52,500.
