Common flowers, uncommon beauty- geraniums California gardeners should fake a moment now and then to give thanks for that horticultural phenomenon, the geranium. For common as it is, the geranium is uncommonly beautiful and in California, it is among the easiest of all plants to grow. Vcu find three types of geraniums in California nurseries—the common Zonal Gemaniums, Martha Washington Geraniums and Ivy Geraniums. All are members of the pelargonium family, but only the JIartha Washingtons are usually referred to as such. There are other geraniums which are grown for their leaf patterns or their scent, but the California Association of Nurserymen reports that these are less popular and consequently less frequently found than they once were. Zonal Geraniums grow like weeds in most parts of our state, but the gardener should never permit them to do so. They are much better for a yearly pruning back and for regular attention from a hose. When grown in pots, as they often are, they should be fed on occasion also to bring out the maximum of bloom and beauty. The flowers of the zonal var ieties are big. rounded heads of color. They come either double or single and it's a matter of per sonal preference which you choose. The color selection is wide enough to suit everyone, with some wonderful shadings of salmon, pink, red and white. Best way to select them is to visit a C.AJ^f. nursery this month or next and see them in bloom. The same goes for Martha Wash' ington Geraniums—or peilargon iums, if you prefer. They are full of color in nurseries right now and a joy to shop for. These are cut from different cloth than the iSeauti^ul ^ImA • CARPETING TILE LINOLEUM See These SPECIAL JULY Prices! Zonal Geraniums, being more delicate in their bloom and less durable over the long run. But, oh, how beautiful they can be when given the slight attention needed to bring out their best performance. We've heard them called "poor man's azaleas" and the nickname is apropos fcr the blooms do have that same delicacy which marks the azalea. They are far easier to grow, however, having the geranium's family ability to thrive on neglect. You buy Martha Washingtons in pots and the C.A.N, suggests leaving them in pots for display on patios or porches. Zonal Geraniums may be handled this way, too, and since they are longer blooming, they will carry color when the Martha Washingtons fade out. Zonals bloom right through summer and into fall. When growing either of these in pots, figure on moving them into larger pots as they grow. Your nurseryman can give you tips on this, with specific directions on how long you can leave the plants you buy in the pots you buy them in. The third type of geranium commonly found in C.A.N, nurseries, the trailing Ivy Geranium, has several uses. It is well suited to use in hangmg baskets, and when planted at the top of a retaining wall, it makes a colorful display as the blooms cascade down. It also makes an excellent ground cover and is especially popular for this use in southern California. Geraniums are sun lovers and should be given sun for at least half the day. Big reputation, they are resistant to drought and established plantings will weather summer's dry spell without dying. But they are much happier with regular watering and will produce better bloom, healthier plants when this is seen to. In pots, especially, they require regular BUSY CABINET — Here is the way to get moximum use of every inch of storage space in dining room cabinet. Figure on watering potted plants twice a week anyway, and more will not hurt them, provided drainage in the bottom of the pots has been attended to. Feed potted geraniums with a complete plant food about once every month or sL\ weeks through summer. Fertilizers in liquid form or those that are water soluble are easiest to use on potted plants; however, any complete food will work so Use what you are familiar with. Cut the plants back about one half in fall' or early sprmg. They'll grow healthy new tops and be full of bloom again the next summer. Botanically the Zonal Geraniums are Pelargonium hortorum; Martha Washington Geraniums are Pelargonium domesticum; and Ivy Geraniums are Pelargon ium peltatum. you have an invitation to visit and see our FIRST SHOWING in REDLANDS.
