67 The Pittsburgh Press, April 16, 1975 'Hodgepodge' Spirits Finish Off Nets the ABA East semifinal series Canucks Beat On 29th Try United Presi International Nothing the Vancouver Canucks had done since they joined the National Hockey League suggested they were going to beat the Montreal Canadiens even once in their quarterfinal playoff. But the Canucks were confident, anyway. Beaten 6-2 on Sunday in the opener of the best-of-seven Spirits ahead for the first time. Willie Sojourner put New York ahead and, with 54 seconds left, Erving lifted the lead to three. Lewis brought the Spirits to within one again with two free throws with 18 seconds left, then hit the winning shot.

York, with no time outs left, had to settle for a Nets Coach Kevin Loughery said. "They were more aggressive, they controlled the boards better and played with more confidence. Give them credit, they took this series on their own. We didn't play our game well, but they went out and won it, we didn't give it to them." Lewis had 29 points and all the clutch baskets, and back-court mate Mike Barr who played his college ball at Du-quesne, added 20 points. The Nets led 60-46 at the half and 81-71 after three Donovan Back With New York NEW YORK (UPI) Eddie Donovan, who was instrumental in constructing powerhouses that brought New York NBA titles in 1970 and 1973, is again General Manager of the Knicks.

Donovan yesterday signed a multi-year contract, confirming weeks of speculation that he would return to New York from Buffalo, where he held a similar position with the NBA Braves April 1. Braves' President Paul Snyder has threatened to tile suit against Donovan for breach of "an oral contract" and take tampering action against the Knicks. Mansperger Hired SEATTLE (UPI) -Dick Mansperger, director of player personnel for the Dallas Cowboys, has been named to the same position with the new Seattle franchise in the National Football League. UNIONDALE. N.

Y. (UPI) Here are the Spirits of St. Louis: Three rookies; An original member of the ABA; A starting guard with a six-point lifetime average; A bald, pot-bellied journeyman picked up in mid-season after being waived out of the NBA; A few well-traveled reserves; And a first-year head coach who looks more like a pediatrician. By this collection of castoffs and raw, youthful talent, the defending ABA champion New York Nets were dethroned last night, eliminated from the playoffs and embarrassed before their own fans. A jump shot with three seconds left by Freddie Lewis gave the Spirits a 108-107 victory, their fourth straight in the playoffs, and clinched STOP AID ATTEND THE LiPKUS RALLY WHEN: APRIL WHERE: MARKET SQUARE PITTSBURGH CONGRESS SSBSBE3H9J9E3 nadiens' coach, wasn't too concerned about the loss.

"I guess the law of averages catches up to you at one time, and I figured they were going to beat us sooner or later," he said. In 28 previous games between the teams, Montreal had won 25 and tied three. Doug Risebrough scored the game's first goal in the second period and the Canucks' Gerry O'Flaherty tied it less than three minutes later. At Buffalo, Rick Dudley scored two goals in the first period to snap a 1-1 tie and lead the Sabres to their second straight victory over Chicago. Dudley took a pass from Jim Lorentz and scored on an 18-footer at 9:59 to put Buffalo ahead, 2-1.

At 15:09, Dudley deflected in a shot by Jocelyn Guevremont. Danny Gare scored the first Buffalo goal and Stan Mikita scored for Chicago. At Philadelphia, the defending Stanley Cup champion Flyers got two goals from Terry Crisp and a strong defense that limited Toronto to 13 shots on goal. Two of the 13 saves by Flyer Goalie Ber-nie Parent were outstanding, however. NHL Summaries Flyers 3, Maple Leafs 0 Toronto 0 0 1-9 Philadelphia 0 2 1-3 First period-No scorlna.

"I don't understand what happened to us, to them," said a stunned Julius Erving after Lewis' shot from the top of the key capped a string of 10 straight points in the last minutes by the bushy-haired six-footer from McKeesport, and helped Spirits overcome a 12-point fourth-quarter deficit. When they did this, they knew a fifth game would become necessary only if they won at least one of the first four. Last night, the Canucks evened the series at a game apiece by beating the Canadiens for the first time in 29 games since entering the NHL, 2- 1, when Garry Monahan scored a deflected goal with 6:14 to play. "We came East to make it an interesting series," said Coach Phil Maloney of Vancouver, which now will have the home ice edge for the next two games.

Montreal was expected to be the only pre-1966 team to qualify for the Stanley Cup semifinals, with expansion teams leading all the other quarterfinal series 2-0 after Buffalo defeated Chicago 3-1, Philadelphia blanked Toronto 3- 0 and Pittsburgh defeated the New York Islanders 3-1.
