30 Pittsburgh Press, Tuesday, Oct. 16, 1973 Battle Lines Polis And Pronovosf Set At Shea Back On Good Terms Pitt's Kirby Smash Success By RL'SS FRANKE Pitt's Rod Kirby has been paid the ultimate compliment by his coach, Johnny Majors, but compliments aren't about to turn the Panther linebacker's head. Right now nothing can turn Kirby's head, and it's a ticklish situation for him this week in practice. A bruised neck muscle found out it is never going to be easy." A good season could be Just as easy as getting along with Greg Polis. ICE CHIPS-Schinkel would like to name a captain and a decision is explained later In the week Last weekend the Penquins played with three alternates: Syl Apps, Ron Schock and Bryan Hextall.

Assistant Coach Fred HucuJ skated at practice with a brace' guarding his sore neck. Pronovost said he set specific goals for this season, but won't say what they are. "Boston College will be awfully tough." Majors agrees. "Boston College will be bigger and better than West Virginia," he said, "as tough as anybody we've played so far. "They'll be the biggest up front offensively and they come off the ball well.

And they're well-coached (Joe Yukica). You just can't run up and down the field on them." PITT PATTER Tailback Tony Dorsett continues to be the freshman sensation among the major colleges. Yesterday he was named to the United Press International backfield of the week for the second time this season. In one way, practice will be easier for the Panthers this week they won't have to listen to Mountaineer music. Last week, tape recordings of West Virginia fight music and crowd noises blared into their ears from the sidelines, to get them acclimated to the football atmosphere in Mountaineer Stadium.

Monster linebacker Mike Bulino got the award for big play of the week for sacking WVU quarterback Ade Dillon, causing a fumble and taking West Virginia out of the game. got the Bad Cat award for the best hit, while Melvin Howard received special recognition for playing the part of WVU's Danny Buggs in practice all week. Offensive linemen cited were center Mike Carey and tackles Dave Blandino and Dave Wannstedt. forces him to look straight ahead at horizon and at Saturday's game at Boston College. Majors says that Kirby is one of the two best linebackers he has ever coached.

The other is Keith Schroe-der, who starred at Iowa State and is pow on Majors' staff. Kirby, a senior from Curwens-ville, is playing linebacker for the first time and he leads Pitt in tackles. Last week he hurt his neck in the big win at West Virginia and it Is still a question whether he will be ready for Boston College. "I'll be ready all right," said By DAN DONOVAN The two hockey players clowned along the boards during practice, one pushing the other away from the puck and shoving him into the boards. They shouted friendly taunts at each other and it looked commonplace enough, two linemates playing around while another line took a turn zipping up the ice.

For the Penguins, though, the scene may be quite meaningful since it is no secret that Jean Pronovost and Greg Polis have had their differences in the past. "Part of last year," said Penguin Coach Ken Schjnkel after he worked his team out for tomorrow's game at Minnesota, "they felt they weren't complimenting each other." As a fellow player, Schinkel knew of Polis and Pronvost's incompatibility, and one of his first moves as coach was to move Pronovost to a line with Nick Harbaruk and Ron Schock. "Nick and Prony get along Kirby I tlMMIHHI- I Gtirlsl Polis Pronovost Friends or a change. shaking hands. In the pas Polis has been the Penguins' version of John Brisker shoot, shoot, shoot.

But that was last year and Pronovost is trying, to forget last year. "That's the good thing about hockey," Pronovost said. "If you have a bad season or a so-so season, you can forget about it the next year and start over again." Pronovost said his problem last year was he didn't forget about the good season he had the year before. "I was living In the past," he said. "I thought everything was going to be easy.

But I Kirby. "Football is fun here now that we're putting things together. Our trouble used to be that either the offense or the defense would do well but the other wouldn't. a matter of doing what we did last week playing the whole game together. We've got six games to show we can win, and every game means hard work and concentration.

Some kidder, that Reggie Jackson. Until that is, he gets a bat in his hand. If Reggie Jackson stays hot, he may make the Shea Stadium fans forget Pete Rose. lj 1H 9 LINE DRIVERS The Mets are doing their best to prevent another wild display by the fans. For the three games in Shea Stadium, they have added a l.OOO-man task force, including 20 experts in crowd control.

A contigent of 670 special police, many of them law enforcement officers from nearby towns, will patrol the confines of the stadium while 330 New York City patrolmen are assigned to areas outside the park. Said Mets' Vice President and Business Manager Jim Thomson, "We're going to do our best to prevent even the slightest repetition of what happened here during the championship series against Cincinnati. We have problems here but we're going to break them. No throwing of objects of any kind will be tolerated. There will be a 100 per cent crackdown on the slightest offenders." Staub took some extra batting practice yesterday and reported his injured shoulder was "improving every day." However, it was still not known whether he would start tonight's game.

Staub flew back from Oakland ahead of his teammates Sunday night. The weatherman predicted fair but chilly weather tonight. Gillman To Run Sagging Oilers HOUSTON (UPI) Sid Gillman, saying "there's just no excuse for failure in our business," has fired Houston Oilers Coach Bill Peterson and taken the job himself, at least temporarily. "The decision was mine and solely mine," Gillman, 61, the Oilers' general manager, said. "We are in a winning business.

There's just no excuse for a failure in our business. Peterson, 49, had a 1-18 record with the Oilers. suffered a knee Injury in preseason training and was benched. Two-year-man Stan White's impressive work at linebacker made him a starter and May asked to be traded. Lions Lose Luce DETROIT (U I )-X rays have disclosed no fracture in tight end Charlie Sanders' dislocated left shoulder but the Detroit Lions have lost middle linebacker Mike Lucci indefinitely with a severe knee sprain.

Sanders will definitely miss the Lions' game with the Baltimore Colts in Detroit this Sunday. Lucci's knee was encased in a cast and it appears likely the veteran middle linebacker will be out at least two weeks. His spot will be taken by rookie Jim Laslavic of Penn State. BALTIMORE (UPI)-Joe Thomas' last stint as auctioneer of the year unknowingly cut deep into the Colts defense, but the Baltimore general manager doesn't have second thoughts about his Oct. 3 trade of Ray May to Denver.

Linebacker Mike Curtis separated his left shoulder in Sunday's 31-13 loss to Buffalo, sidelining him for three to four weeks. Baltimore's other star linebacker, Ted Hendricks, suffered bruised ribs and may be out for two weeks. In his most recent trade, Thomas sent reserve linebacker Ray May to Denver for "undisclosed 1974 draft choices." "These (things just happen," Thomas said. "That trade was made strictly because Ray wanted to go and it was best for everybody." May, a regular last year, very well," Schinkel said at the time. But it was apparent Polls' and Pronovost's abilities are better matched on the ice, and when they were reunited near the end of the season, both padded their goals totals to make the season seem not so disappointing.

"We talk more now," Pronovost said yesterday after practice. year if the other guy did something you didn't like, you would get mad and say, "the heck with him'. This year the communications is much better." Part of the reason they are communicating is the New Greg Polis. "Greg is making plays now," Schinkel said. "Once last weekend, he passed when he should have shot." Rzdskin Reed Out WASHINGTON (UPI) The Washington Redskins will be without the services of tight end Alvin Reed for the next few weeks. Jim O'Brien, who kicked field goals for Detroit's Don McCafferty when he coached Baltimore, will sub for Mann a a i the Colts. Veteran John Hilton will replace Sanders at tight end. Gambling Denied CHICAGO (UPI) Abe Gi-bron disagreed today that his Chicago Bears were "gambling" in Sunday's 46-6 lacing by the Atlanta Falcons.

"I didn't think we gambled except late in the game when we were trying to get the ball back," he said. i 's comment came after Falcons Coach Norm Van Brocklin charged the Bears were gambling with blitzes and got burned. "It's funny how a guy can get his voice back in a week," Gibron said. "Before our game he was giving two-minute press conferences. "1 think they only scored one touchdown on our blitzes and still somebody should have covered the receiver.

It wasn't the fault of the blitz." Eagles Get Even PHILADELPHIA (UPI) -Philadelphia Eagles Coach Mike McCormack finally has won the battle of "last-second" football.
