Carpentier, I state librarian, said today hell has written to all county officials reminding them of the facilities available to them in the State]' 'Archives building for'storage of | security microfilm copies of im-1 portant county records. The negatives of the film may II be d eposited. in the Archives building, while the positives are 'retained by the counties, Mr. Carpentier said, assuring the counties of preservation of their records in e a s e the positives or the original documents are destroyed by fire or other disaster. The negatives are filed in a special security microfilm vault, and they are accepted on the condition that their use is allowed only on the order of the county office which deposited them, Secretary Carpentier said. There | is no charge for the service. • In his letter, Secretary Carpen-|| tier pointed out to county officials that the Archives building | is one of the best designed and constructed in Hie world lor the|| preservation of records. During World War H, he said, I plans were made to transfer important national documents to the Illinois Archives Building in case Washington should be attacked. | At present, four counties Champaign, Crawford, Mercer || and Peoria — have deposited microfilm copies of their records in the building, Mr. Carpentier J] said.
