CLARK 5 NEW YORK (UPI) - To most of Muhammad All's fans, his fourth -crusade for the heavyweight crown h has all the makings of a wake, but gto the men who will bring it to the | world, it will be the biggest cable ^television sports package ever as- gsembled. jj All, who has won and lost the cham- Hpionship three times, goes up against gTrevor Berbick Dec. 11 in a ID-round ^comeback bid at Nassau in the Ba- Shamas, and Lionel Schaen, president of T-the over-the-air pay system SelecTV, -said 27 million Americans will be ^watching. t± 3» £r Thomas Hearns and Marcos Geraldo :-»l*o will be on the card for a Mid- yfleweight bout. ;- "These two are among the most pop- Lular fighters of the day," Schaen said last week at a press conference announcing plans to telecast the fight. "Muhammad AH is a legend and Hearns is a top contender. Boxing is what it is today because of what it was in the '50s when TV made it a major vehicle. Cable is going to take it even farther." "We're heading for that $100 million fight," said Sheldon Saltman, president of Satellite Sports Ltd. "It's just around the corner." SelecTV, Satellite Sports LTD, Medallion TV Enterprises and Video Tape Enterprises have combined forces to telecast the fight — with several others to follow — via satellite to markets throughout the United States and in foreign nations where an additional audience of 25 million is anticipated. "We expect a gross return of between $10 million and $15 million," said Schaen, "and we're going to set a precedent for the industry with the technical innovations we'll be using." It will be offered on a "pay-per-view" basis in some markets and it will be presented on closed circuit in others where few cable or over-the-air operators are available. To broadcast it from the Bahamas, the consortium will score what Schaen claimed as an industry first — a portable satellite uplink, the dish that beams the signal at the satellite transponder that will relay it to receivers worldwide. The 60-man production team will use six cameras, four videotape machines and a graphics generator in addition to the uplink, but Schaen declined to identify the satellite or the specific transponder his group will use. "That's to protect us against pirates and bootleggers," he said. The announcement earlier this year of Ali's attempted comeback left fight fans and sports writers shaking their heads and predicting a tragedy for the man who no longer exactly floats like a butterfly, but Schaen and Saltman were not among the doomsayers. "All is in as good a shape as he's been in the past five years," said Schaen. "For his last fight, he dropped to 215 pounds and it put him down, mentally and physically. He'll weigh in at 230 this time which is his proper weight." Saltman scorned the counting of birthdays - 39 of them for All. "Jersey Joe Walcott won the title at 39," he said. "Jim Fitzsimmons was 45. Archie Moore was 42 when he was light heavyweight champ." Money, said Schaen, is not the motive for All's attempt to regain his crown. "He has all the money he needs," he said. "Ego is it. He wants to be before the public again. He just feeds off that." Blow-by-blow commentator Don Dunphy, who has made himself almost as legendary at the side of the ring over the years as men who have won and lost in its center, was not so sure. "I think Ali and (Joe) Frazier should be declared national monuments and protected," he said. LET US HELP WITH YOUR HOLIDAY ENTERTAINING!
