22 The Salina Journal - Thursday, November 26,1981 Loni Anderson has graduated from her role as dumb blonde The Marquee By VERNON SCOTT HOLLYWOOD (UPI) - Loni Anderson heaved a sigh of relief, convinced she has graduated from the ranks of "This Year's Blonde," a sorority of TV beauties who flash to overnight stardom and then quickly fade. The gorgeous, curvaceous Loni took time out during rehearsal of "WKRP In Cincinnati" for a respite in her dressing room at CBS Studio Center. It was late afternoon but she looked as fresh as morning dew. Loni wore knee-high soft leather boots, blue jeans that looked as if they were tattooed on her long, tapered legs and a loosely knit beige blouse to match her boots. Her soft, straw-colored hair was a provident halo. Her brown eyes sparkled with pleasure as she described her role in a new TV movie, "Sizzle," which ABC-TV will telecast Nov. 29. The adventure drama marks Loni's second venture away from her role of Jennifer in "WKRP." The first was "The Jayne Mansfield Story," which accumulated high ratings and generous applause for Loni. But four years ago Loni was simply the latest in a string of this year's blondes. Among others in recent seasons were the likes of Farrah Fawcett, Cheryl Ladd (both of "Charlie's Angela"), Suzanne Somers (Three's Company) and Sarah Purcell (Real People). Each has striven to generate stardom above and beyond the limitations of their television series, with mixed results. Loni is a classic case of the blonde who becomes an overnight sensation, sought after by movie producers and TV promoters looking for a quick buck by striking while the blonde is hot. But unlike many of the sisterhood, Loni is as bright as she is beautiful. She hasn't made any waves on "WKRP." She is being selective, steering her career through the Hollywood minefields with the expertise of a channel pilot. She refuses to rush into exploitive feature films hurriedly produced to capitalize on her popularity. It was an incautious Farrah who delivered her career an almost fatal blow in "Sunburn." Loni, however, was unable to escape the inevitable fate of other "This Year's Blondes" whose marriages disintegrated after they attained stardom. She and her actor husband, Ross Bickell, are divorced. Loni is keeping a low romantic profile but is comfortably dating Gary Sandy, one of her co-stars on "WKRP." "Now that I've done two TV movies," Loni said, "I would like very much to play a choice, small role in a feature movie surrounded by an outstanding cast of really good actors. I believe in paying your dues. "I see only disasters for people who rush directly from television into starring parts in movies. I'm not afraid of playing a second lead when I'm working with people I admire. You can't be good if nobody around you is good. "I'm not just a leading lady. I'm a character actress and I can play a lot of roles, but it's going to take time." Loni began life as a brunette. The natural color of her hair, in fact, is near jet black. When she came to Hollywood eight years ago from Minneapolis, she quickly discovered that blondes attract even more attention in show business than they do in St. Paul. Gradually, Loni began lightening her locks. She went from black, to brown to light brown, then to redhead, strawberry blonde and finally outright, dazzling white blonde, just this side of platinum. The blonder she got, the more roles came her way in episodic television. Loni didn't have to be a Phi Beta Kappa to get the message. "The lighter my hair got, the more I worked," Loni said. "And the more I worked the lighter I did my hair. "You can see my hair getting lighter and lighter if you see reruns of some of the shows I did - like 'Harry 0.,' 'Barnaby Jones,' 'Police Woman,' 'SWAT,' 'Phyllis,' '.Lou Grant,' and 'Three's Company.' "When my hair was dark, I worked with Farrah in three of those shows. She was the beautiful blonde and I was the beautiful brunette. But when I finally became blonde we were never cast in the same show again." Salina Movies Fox - "The Watcher in the Woods." Vogue - "Raiders of the Lost Ark."
