Page 12 The Salina Journal - Thursday, November 26,1981 High blood pressure questions prove popular Dear Dr. Donohue: Do you use an inordinate number of questions about high blood pressure? — Mrs. R.R. You bet I do. My mail reflects pretty closely the "popularity," if you will, of various illnesses. Put another way, my mail reflects what ailments concern people most, and in just about the proper ratios. Statistics show there are an estimated 35 million Americans who have definite high blood pressure. Of those, 18 million are aware they have it and 12 million are actually being treated. Why 6 million of them have not Joined the 12 million receiving treatment is one of the problems of preventive medicine. It is hoped that by reading about high blood pressure they might come around and see their doctors. The above statistics are published by the American Heart Association and the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. If anything, they might be on the conservative side. iV if -If Dear Dr. Donohue: We read with interest your column on cornea transplants. The article mentioned that more information regarding transplants could be obtained from Lion's Clubs, medical schools, or ophthalmology departments. Our organization also distributes information concerning corneal transplants as well as kidney transplants and the pituitary growth hormone. — A.R. Glad to put your address on the list. It is Rochester Eye and Human Parts dr. donohue to your good health Bank, Inc. 220 Alexander St., Rochester, N. Y. 14607. •fr -tr -fr Dear Dr. Donohue:: I never miss your column in our paper. I do have a problem. My trouble is my bowel movement. I was in the hospital and now that I am home it seems my bowels won't move unless I take a pill. I am taking Correctol, and this helps soften the stool, which is very hard. I eat fruit and a regular diet. Could you tell me more and suggest something to do? I am 80. — Mrs. B.B. The preparation you are taking is a stimulant laxative that also contains a stool softener. That's fine as a temporary measure to overcome situations where your regular bowel pattern might be disturbed, as during hospitalization. Now that you have helped your bowel over a rough time, you want to get it back working for itself. If you don't do that, it will get lazy and even forget how to work. You are presently encouraging it to rely on laxa- THE LOCKHORNS " I CAN'T TELL YOU WHEf?E PVE BEEN WITHOUT ENPANGERlNG NATIONAL SECURITY." I have to return here to the old story about fiber in the diet. The fact that your stool is hard means you are not getting enough fiber in your diet. You'll have to add some. Sprinkle miller's bran onto your morning cereal. Begin with a teaspoon and increase the amount by a tablespoon until your stool is soft. You'll find you won't need the preparation you have been taking. Three tablespoons a day of the bran usually takes care of matters. •fr * * Dear Dr. Donohue: My heart was beating fast and I was breathless. At the hospital I was told I had idiopathic hy- pertrophic sub-aortic stenosis. They called it IHSS. I am taking Inderal. I was wondering if this can cause stroke or heart attack? I am 63. — M.B. To be kind to readers, that's what I'll call it. - IHSS. Let's take the words one at a time. Idiopathic means of unknown cause, although heredity is thought to play a role in IHSS. Hypertrophic means "too well developed." It is a part of the heart muscle that is overdeveloped in IHSS. Sub-aortic refers to the location of the muscle — below the aortic valve. That valve governs outflow of blood from the heart out to the aorta and eventually to the body. The muscle there, being overdeveloped, blocks flow of blood. That's what the stenosis means. Breathlessness, chest pain, and rapid beats are symptoms. The Inderal (propranolol) helps by making each heartbeat less forceful, preventing the muscle from bunching up and blocking blood flow through the valve. Medicine is all some patients need. Others may need surgery to cut away the excess muscle. IHSS does not usually lead to stroke. It can lead to heart failure if not treated. Medicine often controls the situation. Much heart trouble is preventable. Write to Dr. Donohue, in care of Box 19620 for a copy of his booklet, "How to Take Care of Your Heart."
