The Navy accepted 90 men, as compared to 65 in August. The Marine Corps took 115 men in September and 76 the previous month.

While the reported figure for the Army for the month was 736, or 86 less than the total for August, the previous month's figure of 822 was swelled because of 150 men accepted in a special classification which is not now open. All three offices interviewed many-times the number of men accepted. Most were refused for physical disability or because character references failed to measure up to the services' standards. The Regular Army is not now accepting men for one-year enlistments; all enlistments in recruiting offices are for the usual three-year period. The misapprehension is believed due to a ruling by the War Department that men who are registered under the draft may volunteer through their local draft boards for one year of service before then-names are called.

The draft boards have discretion as to whether these men may be granted seniority.
