A6 TUESDAY, OCTOBER 7, 1997 Money THE SALINA JOURNAL T COMPUTERS AOL reinvents itself in the image of television By The Associated Press NEW YORK — The nation's largest online service is upgrading its look in an effort to appeal to more subscribers, modeling its new image on an older medium: television. America Online announced Monday its overhaul, scheduled to roll out next Monday, would feature simplified "channels" on such topics as the workplace, lifestyles or families, said spokeswoman Wendy Goldberg. The "Next AOL," as the company is promoting the overhaul, will be "easy to navigate and understand, and we want to continue that," said Goldberg. The content of the channels will change throughout the day, like TV programming, with a prime time slot, an early morning slot and late night slots, among others. The move reflects the influence of president and CEO Bob Pittman, who helped launch MTV and VH1 before he joined America Online last year. Don DePalma, an analyst at Forrester Research in Cambridge, Mass., said, "The metaphor of a television is something that everybody understands." The company's redesign, he said, is "tied to the presumption that people with remote controls will click their way to the information." Y MERGER Utilities agree to merger changes Western Resources and ONEOK agree to changes from KCC By LEW FERGUSON Tlie Associated Press TOPEKA — Western Resources and ONEOK have agreed to changes suggested by the Kansas Corporation Commission, possibly clearing the way for KCC approval of the companies' proposed merger by next week. Terms of a stipulation and agreement reached by the two companies, the KCC staff and the Citizens Utility Ratepayers Board was presented Monday to the commission. The KCC delayed giving formal approval to the agreement, pending comment from the Kansas City Board of Public Utilities, another regulatory agency whose ap- The merger would create the nation's eighth largest natural gas company, boosting ONEOK's customer base from 730,000 to about L4 million. proval is required. The commission gave the Board of Public Utilities until 3 p.m. Friday to file its comment. Under the agreement, the merger transaction is to be completed by Oct. 15. ONEOK said it wants the merger completed to coincide with the start of the heating season. Western Resources, Kansas' largest utility, would own 45 percent of ONEOK's equity in common and convertible preferred stock. The merger, creating the nation's eighth-largest natural gas company, would boost ONEOK's customer base from 730,000 to about 1.4 million. The Oklahoma Corporation Commission formally approved the merger last Friday, accepting ant agreement among ONEOK, Western Resources, Oklahoma of- Y ARCHER DANIELS MIDLAND ficials and customer groups. "We are very happy the nies were willing to work with us to structure approval of the transaction to protect the ratepayers' interests we had identified in staffs testimony," said Larry Cowger, KCC assistant general counsel. 1 ; Cowger said the key compo;- nents of the agreement as far as satisfying staff concerns include:' • A three-year moratorium on ONEOK's seeking any general rate increase, meaning it would be October 2000 before they could-ask for an increase. ' > • The $66 million acquisition premium Western will realize from the transaction cannot be recovered from ratepayers, but must come out of company profits. < , • The quality of service stan'r dards under Western Resources opj- eration.of its Gas Service Division j must be maintained by ONEOK. Judge may order hearing on destruction of tapes By Bloomberg News CHICAGO — Two former Archer Daniels Midland Co. executives indicted on price-fixing charges got a possible break Monday when a federal judge said she probably will hold a hearing on .whether an FBI agent ordered the destruction of secret tapes made during the investigation that resulted in the charges. "I can pretty well assure there will be a hearing" on a defense motion that tapes made by former FBI mole Mark Whitacre should be suppressed, U.S. Judge Blanche Manning said. '_; ; Former ADM Vice Chairman Michael Andreas and former divir sion president Terrance Wil'soii contend an FBI agent told Whitacre to destroy tapes that would put Andreas and Wilson in a better light. Prosecutors have vigorously denied the allegation.; In a sworn statement in April; Whitacre told prosecutors FBI agent Brian Shepard, who guided his taping activities, told him to destroy a tape "in which an ApM executive declined to become' involved in fixing prices for fructose and citric acid. • ' MARKETS KEY RATES Dally key rates from The New York Times Previous Year Monday Day Ago 6.50 8.50 8.25 6.00 5.00 5.00 5.50 5.42 4.93 4.88 PRIME RATE DISCOUNT RATE FEDERAL FUNDS(x) 3-MO.TREAS.
