She was the star of the Folies-Bergere and the Casino de Paris in the 1920s and 1930s.

Miss Baker, born in poverty, left her hometown of St. Louis with a dance troupe at the age of 15 and performed at Music Hall and the Plantation Club in Harlem. Turned down by Broadway because she was "too ugly," she went to France and became an instant success. She became a French citizen in 1937. Her gallantry went beyond the footlights.

She won the PARIS (UPI) The best-loved American in Paris was mourned today in death that rang down the curtain on a 50-year career as queen of French music halls. Josephine Baker, American-born singer and dancer, died yesterday at 69 in the midst of a triumphant comeback. Got Rave Reviews Miss Baker collapsed Thursday a few hours before she was to go onstage in her latest hit, "Josephine," which opened to rave reviews March 24 and was sold out three weeks in advance. Roach, C.S.S.P., long-time pastor of St. Ann's Church in Millvale, died Friday at Vin-centian Home, North Hills. Father Roach, 74, a Holy Ghost priest, served St. Ann's parish between 1958 and 1974 when he became pastor emeritus. Previously he had served Holy Ghost churches in Philadelphia, Arkansas and Louisiana.

A native of New York City, Father Roach was ordained Aug. 28, 1926, after finishing Ferndale Seminary on Long Island. Surviving are a number of nieces and nephews. Friends will be received from noon to 9 p.m. today at Sperling Funeral Home, 123 North Millvale.

The body will be moved to Ann's Church at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow when visitations will be until 9 p.m. Divine Office at 10 a.m. Tuesday will precede a con-celebrated funeral mass at St. Ann's, located on Lincoln Avenue, with the Rev.

Ethel B. Gogley Mrs. Ethel B. Gogley of Pittsburgh died yesterday in home of her daughter, Mrs. Evelyn Del Boca in Harrisburg.

Mrs. Gogley, 92, had been living at her daughter's home since becoming ill some time ago. She was a member of the Allegheny County Christian and Missionary Alliance Church; the Allegheny County Women's Christian Temperance Union, and the Ameri-can Rescue Mission of Pittsburgh. Surviving in addition to Mrs. Del Boca, are a daugh-t Mrs.

Edna Hunter of Alexandria, a brother, Paul Bickerton of Clairton; three granddaughters and two great-grandsons. Graveside services will be at 11 a. m. Tuesday in Home-wood Cemetery, Homewood Allen Clowes Allen M. "Barney" Clowes, long-time Springdale funeral director, died yesterday in Citizen's General Hospital, New Kensington.

Mr. Clowes, 62, of 801 Pittsburgh Springdale, was a lifelong resident of the borough. He was the third generation of his family in the business and was a partner in the Clowes-Jarvie Funeral Home. He also was a member of the first graduating class (1940) of the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science and was a member of the Allegheny County, Pennsylvania and National Funeral Directors associations. Mr.

Clowes was a lifetime member of the Springdale Volunteer Fire Department and a member of the board of Springdale Public Library and Springdale United Presbyterian Church. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Stella Rusek Clowes, and a sister, Mrs. Marion Walzer of Springdale. Friends are being received today and tomorrow at the Clowes-Jarvie Funeral Home, 8 0 1 Pittsburgh Spring-dale, where services will be held at 11 a.m.

Maud Clayton Maud Clayton, 88, a retired Pittsburgh teacher, died yesterday in the United Presbyterian Home for the Aged, 306 Penn Wilkinsburg. She retired from Langley High School after 50 years of service.

A New York University graduate, she was a member of the Pittsburgh Teachers Association, Pennsylvania State Education Association, National Education Association and the Pittsburgh Nature Club.
