ELLSWORTH — Things have a way of equalling out in the Ellsworth-Southeast of Saline boys basketball series. The two teams went to overtime for the^ second time this month as Ellsworth outscored Southeast 13-9 in the extra period for a 54-50 victory on Tuesday night at the Bearcats gym. Southeast won a three-point decision in OT on January 5 at Gypsum. "We're pretty evenly matched," Ellsworth coach Ron Davis said. "We're not the same kind of ball teams, but I imagine we're alike in what we have to work with — good kids that aren't great but have a lot of heart." Junior reserve Kasey Gwinner came through when his team needed him most, scoring nine of his 11 points for Ellsworth in overtime: The two teams were waging a defensive battle and went into the overtime tied at 41-all. Neither team scored more than a dozen points in any quarter before Ellsworth put 13 points on the board in the four- minute extra period. "It was kind of a beat 'em up ball game," Davis said. "It was tied at 41> in regulation and We were doing whatever we could to get the ball in the hole. "Gwinner came off the bench and stepped up and did a great job, but he had some great passes down inside from his teammate. Trent Taylor threw the ball away about three times t when we played at Southeast, but he got the ball inside tonight and did some great redeeming of himself." Davis said neither team could pull away in regulation, as the-Bearcats led 19-18 at halftime and 31-30 after three quarters. Ellsworth took charge in the extra period, leading by as many as seven points before holding off the Trojans final charge. Peter Reid led Ellsworth (7-6 overall, 2-3 NCAA) with 17 points, while Matt Kohls added 13. Junior Andy Thiel led Southeast (5-8,1-4) with 15 points, while sophomore Thane Douglas added 10• HOPE 95, ST, JOHN'S MILITARY 51 — At Hope, the Lions raced to a 35-5 first quarter lead and coasted past St. John's Military. The Lions were paced by 14 points from senior and sophomore brothers Chuck and Gary Barnett. Ben Lifter chipped in 13 and Brent Riedy added 10 in»the Lion win. St. John's is 0-7 and 0-4. • SALINA CENTRAL GIRLS 40, SCOTT CITY 33 — At Newton, the Salina Central 'girls basketball squad opened play in the Newton Invitational, steadily pulling away late for a victory over Scott City. The win moves Central into tonight's semifinals where the Mustangs (6-5) get a rematch with Dodge City, a 57-40 winner over Wichita Southeast on Tuesday. Central opened the 1995-96 season with a 4439 loss to Dodge City at Salina. Central struggled offensively in the first half but still managed to take a'13*11 lead into the break. Problem? at the free throw line also kept the;-Mustangs from pulling away earlier, as Central hit only 10 of 27 attempts from the stripe, and were 4 of 14 at the line through the first three quarters. Meagan Leahy led the way for Central, scoring nine of the team's 13 points in the first half. Leahy finished with 13 total, while Jennifer French had all nine of her points in the second half. Bulls easily down New York Jordan scores 33 points to lead Chicago to 12th straight win By WENDY E. LANE The Associated Press 'NEW YORK — The Chicago Bulls blew past the New York Knicks with a 19-2 third-quarter run on the way to their 12th straight win, 99-79 Tuesday night. Michael Jordan had 33 points in 36 minutes, .the eighth straight game in which he's put up 30 or more. He's averaging 38.5 during his current streak. Jordan's last visit to Madison Square Garden was a night to remember. In just his fifth game back from retirement, he burned the Knicks for 55 points, the most he's scored in any game since resuming his career last March. In that game, the Bulls needed that kind of effort to eke out a two- point victory. Not this time. The Bulls opened a 20-point lead in the third quarter with then- big - run, and the score was 76-56 at the end of three quarters. Down by nine at halftime, the Knicks made their best defensive stand of the game early in the third quarter, holding the Bulls scoreless for almost three minutes and cutting the lead to 57-50 with 7:44 left in the period. That was the last time New York was the game. Pippen had nine of his 19 points points during the Bulls' big run, and Jordan made his mark with a pretty reverse layup in traffic. The spurt, which included a 4:49 scoreless stretch for the Knicks, put Chicago ahead 7652 with 1:26 left in the period. Chicago coach Phil Jackson pulled his starters early in the fourth quarter as the Bulls cruised to their 35th win in 38 games. The Knicks, who have lost five of their last eight games and three straight at home, were led by John Starks with 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting. Hubert Davis came off the bench to add 11. Luc Longley had 14 points and 10 rebounds while holding Patrick Ewing to 10 points on 5-for-17 shooting and just nine rebounds. Chicago has won the last four games against New York in a series that was among the league's hottest rivalries in the early 1990s. The Knicks used an assortment of players on Jordan, with Mason, Davis, Harper and Starks taking turns checking him. Jordan still hit 13 of his 23 shots. In the first quarter, Jordan scored six straight points, all on jumpers. • MAGIC 105, SIXERS 90 —At Orlando, Fla., The ax hovering over John Lucas was stayed for another night, which meant he had to endure another bout of misery at the helm of the Philadelphia 76ers. The Sixers made it six losses in a row and fell even deeper into the cellar of the Atlantic Division after being defeated 105-90 by the Orlando Magic Tuesday night. Reports say that Lucas may be fired any time, something Lucas called "old news" after the game, but his players say it affects their performance. "There is a lot of uncertainty in the locker room right now," rookie Jerry Stackhouse said. "It's part of the game and you have to deal with it and John is. He's been more intense the past week, but who knows what is going to happen."
