TELEVISION IN REVIEW By RICK OU SROV/ United PrMj \nitrnafiona) HOLLY\VOOD (UPI) - Notes to watch television by: Sing along with tht "TotJay" show: On Tuesday, concert singer Marian Anderson will be a guest on NBC-TVs "Today"...On Wednesday, folk singer Odetta entertains on the same program... And nest Friday, 'Today" offers one of the greatest of popular song stylists, Jlabel Mercer...Also ne.xt Friday, Gov. Terry Sanford of North Carolina visits "Today" to discuss a special school he has established for gifted children in Winston-Salem. Sad sfcry: ABC-TV's rescheduling of "Ben Casey" so that it is in competition with CBS-TV's "Beverly Hillbillies" this fall is bringing forth unending cries of anguish from those involved...A while back, "Casey" star Vince Edwards e.tpressed unhappiness and was told by ABC to calm down...Now Paul Henning, who created the "Hillbillies," says he sympathizes with the "Casey" people...He says both shows will be hurt. Cause and effect: With fewer Hollywood movies being turned out in recent years, television station owners are having to pay higher and higher prices for old films to show on video...Nevertheless, the movies on television continue to murder business at theatres—and not only in this country.,.In Italy, for instance, theatre ouners are demanding a severe limit to motion pictures on video...French and Russian film houses are also reported feeling the pinch. Result: As Hollywood insiders have knovnt all along, the inevitable effect on foreign moviemak ers by television in their home countries is already leveling their challenge to this film town for supremacy in production...American moviemakers have already gone through the tough television period that those overseas are just begmning to face. Surprise awakening: In France, according to trade reports, the immense impact of television on viewers was brought home dramatically to film people by a visit from an American video star earlier this year...The star was Gardner McKay, who formerly headlined the "Adventures in Paradise" series on ABC-TV...rne series had been seen on French television...And McKay got an enormous reception, which, according to the reports, emphasized to the movie people the need to come to terms with the opposition—or to combat video the way it is being done here.
