Careers Hinge On Quest' Stars Share For Western Skepticism, Optimism Morgan Baudine, was raised by Indians, They tout the authenticity of "The Yet both young men (Tim is 28 and iff 1 Despite the voulh of the Baudine brothers, there will also be violence. "It won't be exploitive violence," says Tim. "But it will be there because it WAS there. One script, for instance, gets us involved with a bunch of bad guys.

We know it's them or us, so we follow them out of the saloon and shoot them in the back. That's the way it was done, 100 years ago." There is a dichotomy of sorts about "The Quest." The audience for a western heretofore has been Ynostly a family oneji.e. children). Yet last season's "Sara" failed in the Family Hour time slot. So NBC is testing the waters with an adult western, and last week moved "The Quest" from 8 p.m.

to 10 p.m. Tonight's Best 10-11 "ABC Closeup: New Religions," Channel 4. Bv BARBARA HOLSOPPLE Press TV Radio Edilor Having survived the child actor stage, Kurt Russell and Tim Mathcson come to NBC's new western, "The Quest," with equal amounts of skepticism, optimism and strength. "I think there's a market for the western again," cautiously notes Matheson. "Let's face facts." his co-star adds.

"The scripts have to be there. Or once again we trot to oblivion." Both actors smile. They have credits longer than many a Hollywood actor, "and still we're unknowns," Kurt admits. "How do you manage that?" he asks Tim with a grin. They laugh, and there is a slight touch of sarcasm in their voices.

It is a common trait for those who struggle to bridge the gap between childhood acting and adult careers. Quest" as the key that may make the difference, as they go up against "The Blue Knight" and "Charlie's Angels" Wednesdays at 10 p.m., starting Sept. 22. THEY PLAY BROTHERS reunited, after an Indian massacre which took their parents' lives eight years earlier. Their quest is their sister, known to be living with a band of Cheyenne Indians.

That quest is Authenticity No. 1. "The Cheyenne were nomads, and we know they averaged about 1,0110 miles in a four-month season ol wandering before they settlcd-in each winter," Tim notes. "Given the form of communication available back in the 1870s and 1880s, it is very possible to have looked for somebody for seven or eight years and never have found them," Kurt adds. The two brothers will represent the West's two major lifestyles.

Kurt, as who named mm two Persons. He is like them, even to the point of mistrusting the white man. Tim as Quentin Baudine was raised in San Francisco and given a fine education. He hopes to continue studies in medicine after the quest for his sister is concluded. "People may say we don't look like brothers, but it is amazing how much we do look alike," Kurt notes.

"Actually, my hair in its natural shade is almost as dark as Tim's." HISTORICAL EVENTS and famous people will provide the basis for the brothers' adventures each week. "We will become involved with buffalo hunters, we'll travel for a while with a sect ef black cowboys, and we'll meet Cattle Kate, the only woman who was ever hanged for the records, anyway," Kurt notes. Kurt is 25) have no regrets about entering acting so young. Tim has been acting since the age of 13. and has been seen in such films as "Yours, Mine and Ours" with Henry Fonda and Lucille Ball.

He has been a regular on both "Bonanza" and "The Virginian." Kurt, probably best known for his Disney movies, made his debut in 1963 in an Elvis Presley movie. He followed in the footsteps of his father, who was the deputy sheriff on "Bonanza" for 14 years. Also like his father, Kurt had aspirations of playing pro baseball. Four seasons as a second baseman in minor league ball resulted in an arm injury that returned him to Hollywood. Both actors go into "The Quest" knowing how difficult it is to achieve success.
