C4 Akron Beacon Journal Friday, September 30, 1 98 TELEVISION Enjoy 'Yellow Rose? forget other 3 premiering series' Four now series premiere this week David Bianculli NBC channels) proves that Stephen Cannell, producer of The A Team and llardcastle McCormick, is now incapable of writing five consecutive pages of script without inserting a car chase. The 90-minute pilot is full of gratuitous chases, unnecessary exposition and bad acting. Chad Everett, as Wyatt Earp (bouncer for a family-run carnival), is better than his role, but that's not saying much. If this show catches on, I'll eat my Stetson. The Yellow Rose (Sunday at 10, NBC channels), conversely, is a winner.

Another outstanding MTM Production, this show features Sam Elliott and David Soul (in his best role ever) as men teaming to help save a family ranch from the clutches of Chuck Connors. THE CAST IS faultless Susan Ans-pach, Edward Albert, Noah Beery, Ken KurtU all contribute invaluable bits of business, and Cybill Shepherd's Colleen Champion is the sexiest character to grace prime time TV drama since Hill Street Blues' Joyce Davenport and John Wilder's script is refreshingly intelligent. This Yellow Rose should blossom, even when it moves to Saturdays opposite ABC's Fantasy Island. As in Hill Street Blues, the dialogue sounds dlsarmingly real. And Elliott, as this show's mysterious hero, is perfect.

MATTHEW SHAW, reporter for WEWS-Ch. 5, will leave his Job and last name behind when he leaves Eyewitness News Oct. 14 for a Job as general assignment reporter for superstation WOR-TV. When he begins work there Oct. 24, his 30th birthday, he will be known as Matthew Schwartz his real name.

"I'll be going home to my family, my friends and to New York," Shaw said. "And it's OK to be known as Schwartz there." WOR, currently based in New York, will be reassigned soon to become New Jersey's first TV station. Shaw Schwartz will report for the station's new 8 p.m. news show. VITRIOLIC RADIO talk show host Gary Dee, who has been absent from thei WHK (1420-AM) airwaves for most oftr.

September, was terminated on Tuesday, largely because a station-commissioned Cleveland survey found Dee's approach to have outlived its "We discovered that people felt positm tively about the city now," station ager Ron Jones explained. "His kind humor, which is tongue-in-cheek and mostly negative, we found that didn't want to hear any longer." mi DEE'S MOUTH HAS landed on its feet, however. He soon will start morning drive host for a pair of radios-stations in Alexandria, Va. Meanwhile, WHK program director Bill Steadmaa'-and commentator Dan Coughlin are sur.ii stituting for Dee, while station execu: tives seek a permanent replacement. Jones said Dee's replacement would "definitely be somebody from the side" eliminating the possibility of house advancement and added were looking for someone "positive and bright." end.

One, NBC's The Yellow Rose, is a classy, sexy modem Western, well worth watrhin. The others, NBC's Man-imal and The Rousters and CBS's Cutter to Houston, are well worth missing. Manimal tonight at 8:30, WKYCCh. 3, WFMJ-Ch. 21.

Steubenville's WTOV-Ch. 9) stars Simon MarCorkindale as Prof. Jonathan Chase, a man who can change at will into different animals a hawk, a panther, even a shark. A police detective, played by Melody Anderson (flash Gordon), Joins forces with him and to-comes Chase's partner and, at times, keeper. THIS MKTAMORPIIOSIH gimmick has been seen before, most recently In Cat People but before that In Spare: 1999, Ster Trek and most other fanciful TV series.

Manlmal is too plodding to be fanciful, too witless to be funny and too obsessed with special effects to be interesting. When the professor starts changing, the audience should change, too change channels. Cutter to Houston (Saturday at 8 p.m., WJKW-Ch. 8, WKBN-Ch. 27, Wheeling's WTRF-Ch.

7) sets new standards for stupidity in medical dramas. In one scene, Shelley Hack (a former Charlie's Angel) prepares to amputate an accident victim's arm with a scalpel; other scenes are equally wooden, if not equally asinine. The only person to emerge without disgrace is Kelbe Nugent, who steals the show as a vixenish town woman. Considering the quality of this show, though, she may want to give it back.
