The Republic, Columbus. Saturday. February 20, 1988 A7 no Objects of Our Affection RESISTANCE OVER Barbara heritage and my stepmother's Italian blood. Both are very dark-skinned ladies. Although I was equally proud of my father's beautiful, wavy blond hair and sky blue eyes, I was also proud of my mother's long, straight, black hair, and her snapping black eyes.

It never occurred to me that either was more lovely or more acceptable than the other. That's the nature of love. It works in families. It can work in society. We must continue to educate ourselves about each other, we must continue to communicate with our fellow man and most of all we must apply the kind of love we feel for our families to the enitre family of mankind.

AS WE REMEMBER that Jesus Christ came as the divine emancipator and the Holy Spirit as the divine equalizer, it will be easier to live together in harmony and love. Someday we will know that the spirit of man has no color and every man bleeds red and cries salty and breathes the same air. And someday when we leave this earth, if we go to heaven we'll be changed into his likeness, and those who choose to go to hell will hardly be concerned about anyone's nationality or skin tones. Abraham Lincoln said that "Rivers follow the line of least resistance, that's why'they are so crooked1" Fact is. not much happens in life that does not meet and overcome some form of resistance The greater the obstacles overcome, the stronger the person.

As one leader put it years ago during some national crises: "What does not, destroy me makes me stronger. Jesus made it quite clear that he had not come to make life easy, but to make persons great And without conflict and crises, real growth cannot happen. It is precisely because we confront and overcome life's mountains that strength and wisdom become ours. Jesus himself said: "strait is the gate, and narrow is the way. which leads to life.

(Matt. 7:14) Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Matthew Matthew Matthew Matthew secures selected by Sunday Monday Tuesday Mark Mark Mark Copyright 1988. Keister-Williams Newspaper This weekly messoge is sponsored by these local businesses: February is black history month and we're hearing a lot about the contributions blacks have made in our country. With that thought in mind my husband brought home the video, "Roots" with the intention of us watching it together. "I CANT WATCH it with you," I declared.

"Why?" he asked, surprised that I couldn't watch a historical knowing my affinity for anything that concerns history. I can't stand itl' I moaned. "It's too painful to watch in vivid color man's inhumanity to his fellow man. I tried to watch it when it first appeared on television," I explained. "I would get so angry that I'd pace the floor and have to leave the room.

Then I'd return and I'd cry and hurt so badly I just couldn't watch. I just can't put myself through that again." Does discrimination of any kind make you ill? Does one person's attempt to enslave another rile your soul? Does disrespect for human dignity stir your spirit to rise in defense of the victim? ELAINE SMITH ADDRESSED one of the problems earlier this month in the feature about her Afro-American culture exhibit held at the Commons and covered by this newspaper. Sunday Special Correspondent applied stereotypes to each other," about which she expressed a concern. "Instead of looking at each other as human beings," she explained, "we're looking at the color of skin." I see this demonstrated among black friends of mine.

They always speak to other blacks whether they know them or not. I asked several people, "Do you speak to all Indians, Orientals or all Caucasians?" The obvious answer was "no." "Then why do you speak to all blacks? Isn't that practicing the color consciousness you have worked so hard to defeat?" Human beings are human beings. "God has made of one blood all nations of the earth," the scripture declares. Isn't it time we (all races of people) practice that basic principle? I GUESS THIS COMES easy to me because of my mother's Indian School '9 30. Worship 10 45 am.
