notice that a nexcomer aspirant for the post office Is going around getting signatures of Repub- petition to certiy to licans on his his good political mora-l-(y, re-li-ability," remarked the and Democrat, who had been Prominent keeping close tab on the comings of the aspirants for the and goings offire job. "That petition WAS post shown to me for a signature and when I saw the line-up of Republicans who were trying to establish the claim of the Pike- county candidate for the Alton post oflice, I naturally made a few inquirips. I interviewed one prominent who had signed up the Republican petition and he gave as his that he believed it good policy for the Republicans to faror the appointment of the Pike-Lincoln councandidate, as be thought the disty affection that would result among Democrats would be worth many votes to the opposition in the future. Other Republicans bud otber reasons for signing and it reminds me of 1 case of a Democratic editor who way seeking the post office. He was running a paper in which 70 per cent of the stock was owned and controlled Republicans who had bought an interest in the paper to be able to control it.

The editor was bard to handle. He needed handling every twice in a while, some times handling. sometimes financial handand the hands that had to handie him began to get sore. They wanted to transfer the responsibility to the Government, so they undertook to get him the post office. They signed up 7 petition to the congressman, only they hadn't counted on the congressman having as much horse sense as Billy Baltz has, so they tried to show how will.

ing they were that the aforesaid Democratie editor should have the job. However. it was discovered that they were not so disinterested as might have appeared, had not the fact of their financial interest in his paper come to light, and the congressman personally saw to it that the choice of the Simon pure Demo. crats was given the favor, and the choice of the Republican financiers of a Democratic newspaper got turn down. I don't belleve that Hepublican indorsements will go far in this case, Billy Baltz is so: looking out for the interests of the Republican party.

-He intends to make an appointment that will be highly satisfactory to most Democrats, and won't outrage too much the feelings of the Republican stamp buyers. "The other candidates for the post office have been laying low, and have not been bothering Billy Baltz. They haven't been hunting for signatures of Republicans on 1 petition to the congressman-elect to hurry up and fire a Republican postmaster whose time isn't up. They are willing that the Republican postmaster shall hold on to his job until his time is out. In fact, they aren't in any such pressing need for the job that they have to crowd the mourners too hard, and step on the heels of the at the Republican funeral.

"Some time ago I heard it said by one candidate that Champ Clark was going to grab off that prize, and drop it in the lap of an adopted son of his who had moved to Alton, and who, with blind faith in Alton, brought here: "big bank account" to start a Democratic newspaper. Evidently Champ Clark has sent word be can't do anything outside of biz district, else why this hurry to get Republicans to certify as 3 fact that this friend of Champ Clark carried the city of Alton, the county of Madison, the 22nd congressional district and the whole state of Illinots for Woodrow Wilson. I believe that some of these Republicans who want this newcomer to get the job. knowing what a row it would make In the Democratie ranks, would certify to anything, almost, because they belleve the end justifies the means and they know that it would be costly to the Democratic party. not only in Alton, but in Madison county, if Congressman Baltz givos the job to the applicant who is getting their approval for the jon.

"Remembering, as I do, what Bllly Baltz told me, that he WAR going to consider the character of end ability the applicant and the bearing on the interests of the Democratic (y, I can't help thinking that this petition that is being waste of time, paper and ink. prepared Is and al50 an "altogether unnecessary opportunity for Republicans 10 try to Barnard Kerr The Upper Alton Druggists have just received a full aupply Nyals Family Remedies Ask for booklet telling how to Ket well and koop well. Justice Sitas G. Cooper, of East Alton, has announced his intentlobe of making the race for the office justice of the peace in Woodriver township which he has served most emciently so many years. Some time ago Justice Cooper told some of bis friends that he did not believe would make the race this time as he had held the office long enough. But the people of East Alton demand that one of the township justices be 3. man located in their village as Wood river, Bethalto and all the other small corporations in the township have a justice and they want one, too For the accommodation of his East Alton fellow citizens Mr.

Cooper will run and will no doubt be elected. He is the second candidate out in the township. Arthur Thomas, a young glass worker, of Upper Altop, made application today for nomination papers and he will be a candidate for agsistant supervisor. Candidates for all township officers in Woodriver have been pretty scarce so far but as It is very early in the game no there will be plenty when the time comes tor printing the official lot. The Sewer Question at the Insane Hospital.

The question has been raised here 86 to what the new state hospital will do for sewerage, Woodriver will be the natural drainage for the hospital but will it be permitted by the bealth authorities when Upper Alton was shut out from draining directly into Woodriver. It Woodriver could be used for direct sewage by Upper Alton it would settle the sewer ques. tion in this part of Alton. If it can be used by the state insane agylum it will settle all difficulties out there. The hespital will be about as big a thing as Upper Alton originally was and the sewer question there may be an important one.

It is suggested by an Upper Alton man that the sewer question in Upper Alton be laid On the table untli we see what the state institution does, But then of course it would cause 2 long delay with the sewering of this end of the city and if we are going to have sewers at all we want them quick. Farmers Advocate Road Dragging. Now that freezing and thawing weather has get in the country roads will be very bad for travel. Several farmers walked into town this morning from Fosterburg and other places rather than to ride over the rough frozen roads. They have plenty of "hard roads" just now but the hard roads are too rough. One farmer roads are too rough.

One farmer said that if the farmers generally would get out and drag the roads as they thaw and rfeeze they would ho kept smooth and travel would be fine over them when the ground is frozen. Dragging will also help the road from being cut up and deep holes being made when the mud is deep. Notes.
