"We're in pretty tough in our division," worries Bristol not unnaturally since the Cincinnati Reds and Los Angeles have been 1 smt. But Hilltop, 15-5 overall, had a 9-3 record in Section 17, two of the losses to St. Paul, the section champion.

Cookie's 25-point average represented about 40 per cent of the team's scoring. "We would have been not much without her," said SECOND HEAD of HAIR nominating Sister Christopher, the team coach. "But things are looking up; they really are." ball coach," said the square-jawed, iron-willed Georgian admiringly. "He's been a winner everyplace he been.

What be did at Pittsburgh was amazing." You could sense that Dave Bristol was setting that same goal and a similar timetable, perhaps for himself at Atlanta. "I think we're getting the kind of people we need," said Bristol, referring to owner Ted Turner's activity in baseball's trading mart. "Jeff Burroughs ought to give us the kind of power we ve got to have. "We didn't have any power at all last year," said Bristol. Burroughs, so richly coveted that the Braves gave op five players and cash to land bim from the Texas Rangers, is the key to any success the Braves might have.

Until he tailed off a year ago, the 201-pound outfielder, the first player selected in the 1)61 draft, was regarded as one of baseball's most promising youngsters. Three years ago, he was the American League's Most Valuable Player. Since then, he has been a monumental flop, a pitiful figure trying to hit .240. For Dave Bristol, the challenge is clear: the rehabilitation of Jeff Burroughs. It's one of two projects the affable manager, one of the most approachable people in sports, has assigned to himself this year.

The other is Pitcher Buzz Capra. Three years ago, Capra was a sensation. A rookie for all intents and pur- Roses. Capra's 2.U ERA led the lational League and his 18-8 mark earned him spot on the All-Star team. Arm surgery year ago made bim virtually ueless to Bristol.

Next year we're going to show them. "Cookie can shoot well from 25 or 30 feet; she has a good set shot. She has good jumping ability; she jumps as though she's 5-8 or 5-9." But Hilltop had only one tall girl, a sophomore, and much of the time it got only one shot at the basket. Cookie made her shots count. Against Canevin she scored 50 of her team's 64 points and Hilltop lost by two.

Against Holy Ghost, Hilltop scored 59 points and Cookie got 41 of them. Next year Cookie expects to do her scoring for a college team Pitt, Waynesburg and Slippery Rock have shown an interest in ber and maybe her postseason luck will be better. ACC Player Of Year RALEIGH, N.C. (UPI) Wake Forest's Rod Griffin, the most accurate field goal shooter in the Atlantic Coast Conference this season, has been named the ACC player of the year. Griffin averaged 20.7 points and 8.9 rebounds a game this year.

His high game, 37, came against Virgin-la Tech. NAME CITY fcr VX i 1 1 -inrnuFNC auc rj' zilji ine reason, ot course, is nve-fold. Since the Braves arrived in West Palm Beach a year ago, Bristol, wheeling and dealing, has acquired the nucle-ii of a ball dob that has the Dodgers and Reds nervously looking over their shoulders. The reasons are Willie Mod-tanei, Mike Marshall, Andy Messer-smith, Gary Matthews and Jeff Burroughs. "That gives me a lot more to work with than I had a year ago," said Bristol, relishing the prospects of dealing with winners for a change.

Bristol, Sparky Anderson's predecessor at Cincinnati who had something to do with developing the Reds into the powerhouse they are, is acutely aware of the role of winners. Like the bad apple which can spoil a whole barrel, a winner can influence the thinking of an entire team. "The big problem with this team was its attitude," said Bristol, fingering a situation which developed while a ball club became more concerned with the individual exploits of one of its parts than it was with the overall success of the machine. The pre-Bristol Braves were a team without purpose. "You couldn't tell by the won-lost record," said Bristol, "but as the season went on last year, you could sense a difference in the team.

It became a lot more interested in playing ball." Unlike most baseball managers who are oblivions to other sports, Bristol is a stident of success, wherever he finds it. Talking to a Pittsburgher, he was eager to learn something about Johnny Majors, why he was successful, what made him tick. "Majors has to be a good, solid foot i'XIirrfilliiPv 'AUTOMOTIVE CENTER ml OFFER EXPIRES SAT. MARCH 12 "I'd like to see that fellow come back to where he was," said Bristol. "He could mean a lot to this team." Despite his cautious optimism, Dave Bristol is realist enough to know it won't be easy to overtake the Reds and Dodgers.

Third place in the West is not out of the question though, he insists. That would be a bonanza, at least in Atlanta, where a disillusioned city is souring on its team. The Braves drew only 500,000 two years ago. But attendance was up last year," said Bristol, citing the Braves' spurt to 818,179 who watched the team. Jl think people started to realize we were improving.

"Frankly, I'll be surprised if we're not better this year," added Bristol. "One thing I'll promise you though. The Braves are going to be out there scratching in every game." 8 Ft. His mother struggled to raise three children alone. He began playing basketball in jun-- ior high and honed his skills on New York City's playgrounds. Soon, he was an exception player-good enough to play for many major universities. Lloyd McMillian's story is a familiar one-thousands have had similar experiences. For most, however, the story ends there.

Some never go to high school. Most never go to college. And most never leave the ghetto. "I know personally 200 fine basketball players from New York City who ever went to high school and never 3 TON 12" TON 15" I thought of going to college," said McMillian, a senior forward at Long Beach State. "They're either walking the streets, are in jail or are on drugs.

But McMillian was more fortunate than most: be had a brother who cared enough to make sure he stayed away from trouble. McMillian's brother Jim, a former Laker forward now playing with the New York Knicks, arranged for Lloyd to attend Storm King, an expensive private high school in upstate New York. "I had gone through the public school system in New York and it wasn't the best," Jim said. "I'm sure it hadn't improved much a few years later. I was worried that he wouldn't get the same academic help I had.

I had teachers and coaches who helped me mature academically. They took an interest in me, not just to see that I got good grades but to see that I learned. Now, a 6-5 senior at Long Beach State, Lloyd is far removed from ghetto life. He is a mature, intelligent, articulate person who realizes there's more to life than slam dunks and fast breaks. A talented player who leads the 49ers in scoring (16.8 points per game) and rebounding (8.2 per game), McMillian possibly has a future as a pro.
