10 Redwood Region Logging Conference March 2004 Scholarships The Redwood Region Logging Conference offers several scholarships to provide financial assistance to forestry students enrolled in college. The first is the Emanuel Fritz Memorial Scholarship. Professor Emanuel Fritz is known as a pioneer in the Redwood Region for his efforts in promoting the use and sustainability of second growth redwood forests. He was instrumental in the development of the California Forest Practice Rules, the purchase of Jackson State Demonstration Forest, and is the founder of the Redwood Region Logging Conference. This year three students have each been awarded a $2,000 Fritz Scholarship. Estelle Palley is enrolled as a forestry student at Humboldt State University. She was raised in Covelo and has worked as a logger and forestry technician. Estelle graduates in June of next year and plans on working for a consulting forester in Mendocino County. She hopes to become a Registered Professional Forester. Erica Meta Smith graduated from Mendocino High School and now attends the University of California, at Berkeley. Erica has worked for the USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service in Guam and the Mariana Islands. Erica will graduate in June next year. She hopes to find forestry employment in Northern California and become a Registered Professional Forester. Jesse McNames grew up in Etna in Siskiyou County. Jesse is a forestry student at California Polytechnic University and plans on graduating next year. Jesse has worked for Timber Products in Yreka as a forestry technician. He hopes to find forestry employment in Northern California and become a Registered Professional Forester. The other scholarship is the Kent L. Holmgren Memorial Scholarship. Kent L. Holmgren was a fourth generation Humboldt County resident. He was a timberland owner, a logger, a registered professional forester and a sawmill owner. Mr. Holmgren was involved with the development of State forest practice rules and forester licensing regulations. He served on the College of the Redwoods Advisory Board and on the Redwood Region Logging Conference Board. He was a member of the Forest Landowners of California and the Association of California Loggers. These two students from die College of the Redwoods have each been awarded a $500 Holmgren Scholarship. Jaclyn Campbell moved to Humboldt County from Placerville and is starting her first year at CR as a forestry student. She is excited about her new course of study and ultimately hopes to become a forestry technician. She is considering attending Humboldt State University in two years. Chris Jensen grew up in Scotia and has just started taking forestry classes at CR. In addition to school, Chris also works as a forestry technician at PALCO. Chris is planning on attending Humboldt State University in two years and ultimately hopes to become a Registered Professional Forester.
