State announces 5-year road plans; none in Humboldt County The Iowa State Highway Corn* mission this week announced its .schedule for highway construction work during the next five years with work starting in 1967. Hamboldt was one of three 'tows counties iri which the commission has no work scheduled in the five-year plan. Emmett and Powesniek counties are the only other counties in which the state is not planning construction work. During the past summer, the' state completed two road projects in Humboldt County. Highway No. 3 was resurfaced with asphaltic concrete from the intersection of highway No. 3 and 169 in Humboldt west to Gilmore City. Highway 169 was also resurfaced from Humboldt south to Highway 413. It had been hoped in Humboldt County that Highway 169 north of Humboldt would be widened, resurfaced and the curb eliminated within the near future. While Humboldt County was not faring so well, neighboring counties were doing much better. Kossuth County has work total- ling $301,000, Pocahontas $572,000, Wright County, $2,133,000, and Webster County $2,515,000. State highway projects In neighboring counties are as follows. Pocahontas County In 1967 - Resurfacing of Iowa 315, from Junction Iowa 17 east to Palmer, 4.2 miles, $96,000; resurfacing of Iowa 195 from Junction with Iowa 17 east to Plover. 2.9 miles, $67,000; replace bridge over Cedar Creek in Fonda on U. S. 5. $60,000; repair bridge over I. C. Railroad tracks on Iowa 5, 3 miles west of Fonda $20,000. In 1968 - Right of way, bridges, culverts, paving, railroad signals on Iowa 3 in Pocahontas from First Street east 0.72 mile. $364,000. In 1969 - 24 x 20 foot slab bridge at south edge of Pocahontas on Iowa 17, $22,000; reconstruct north Junction of Iowa S and 17, 0.5 mile, $188,000. In 1971 - Right of way Iowa 17 from Pocahootai to the Palo Alto County Unt. 11.9 mile*. $30,000. Wright County In 1967 - Culverts and shoulder widening on Iowa 3 from Goldfield to Clarion, 9 miles, $86,000; bridges, • culverts, shoulder widening on U. S. 69 east to Franklin County line. 6 miles, $36,000. Webster County In 1967 - Intersection lighting at the Junctions of U. S. 20 and 169 and U. S. 169 and Iowa 5, both contracts have been let this year. Overhead signing at the Junction of U. S. 20 and 169 at a cost of $44,000. Intersection lighting and overhead signing at the east junction of U. S. 169 and Iowa 175, cost $48,000. 1968 - Complete repairs on viaduct over the railroad on U.S. Site of proposed new city building The c/fy of Humboldt has purchased an 82'/2 ft. by 82% ft. oreo on fhe northeast corner of" fhe /nfersecf/on of Fifth Street South and First Avenue South owned by Mrs. August Kocher of Humboldt. A new city building is proposed for this location to house the city offices, fire department and police department. A bond vofe fo finance fhe proposed building will be held probably in the early spring. The First National Bank will hold open house at its new Social Center in the basement of the Humboldt Post Office building from 2 to 5 p.m., Wednesday. December 28. The center is available for social and club use without charge. At a board of education meeting Monday night, December 19, a new planting agreement was entered into with Jerry L. Bailey, landscape architect, for the completion of the high school arboretum. The arboretum was a gift of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Morehouse and was presented and dedicated in an Arbor Day observance last April 29, at which time the Board of Education entered into an agreement with the Trusty Garden and Supply of Fort Dodge to undertake the planting of the arboretum. —..^l«.-^"., -^"Vf _,: .. ...... Due to the IDI heattE of Mr. Trusty and his subsequent decision to go out of business, there has been a delay in getting the arboretum planted. Jerry L. Bailey, landscape architectural engineer of Iowa State College and a Humboldt native who has recently returned from service in Vietnam, has been engaged by the board to undertake the completion of the landscape agreement for the project. The evening ceremony was held in Ramsey Theatre which is located in the Val Peterson Fine Arts Center at Wayne. W. A. Brandenburg, Ph. D., president of the college, presented the graduates with their degrees, and Karl Meyer, Ph. D., president of Wisconsin State University at Superior, Wis., gave the address. Doctor M»yer spoke on. "Com• mencement, a Beginning," stressing that the /two points to strive for are, fproper us* of the knowledge explosion," and "continuous adjustment to changts in living patterns," Jim's fiancee, Myra Walker, and her parents, Mr. and Mrs, Glenn Water, of Wayne, Neb!, gave a 4tnn»r Inhls honor. Conaie, and Another addition to Dodgen Industries was recently announced with the purchase of Cox Weld% Service of New Richmond, ., according to John Dodgen, President. Cox buUt self- unloading systems with a belt conveyor and auger system in the bulk feed industry. Dodgen will now manufacture these units at Humboldt in addition to their screw conveying self-unloading systems. Dodgen will also service the Cox belt conveying systems that are operating throughout the midwest. Francis Cox has Joined Dodgen as the foreman of the Over The Road Transport Division of Dodgen Industries. He will supervise the construction of the belt, conveying systems in the over- the-road transports for Dodgen. He is a World War Q veteran, married and has a son and two daughters. Approximately 250 deciduous trees remain to be planted in this project which were included in Ow original gift of Mr. and Mrs. Morehouse, Mr. Bailey proposes to begta and complete this planting project during the early planting season of 1967. The Board of Education also entered into an agreement with Mr. Bailey to provide 36 plantings of evergreen varieties and 13 different species of shrubbery that will be added to tnt planting program contributed by Mr. and Mrs. Morehouse. Through this gift that has beta made available to the senior high school site, laboratory project in trees with marked specimens that can be observed on the site will be available to the wool* community.
