March 2004 Redwood Region Logging Conference Logging Conference for Umber Industry and Community ByB.J. Bassett California Grown is the theme for the 66th Annual Redwood Region Logging Conference. This year the conference is at the Fairgrounds in Ukiah, Thursday, March 18th, through Saturday, March 20th. The conference alternates locations with Eureka every other year. On Thursday, March 18th, the day begins with the Education Day at the Fairgrounds. The logging conference strives to teach children the ways of forest care. Local schools are invited to participate by attending the show each year. Classes are encouraged to work together to produce a mural reflecting the forest products industry. Free to the public are the historic displays, the Lumberjack Show and Competition, and the Chainsaw Carving. Visitors also enjoy the Trucker Rodeo and the Portable Sawmill 'Shoot-Out'. The Annual Golf Tournament, held this year at the Ukiah Municipal Golf Course, gives participants a chance to relax and renew old friendships. The day ends with an Art Show Beer and Wine Tasting Gala and Chainsaw Carving Auction at Carl Purdy Hall. The art displayed throughout the as well as panel discussions on current issues that directly affect day to day operations of the forest industry are a focal point for conference attendees. Topics include forest management, forest products, and wildlife and safety. Other events are the Ladies Luncheon and tour at the Fetzer Sierra Nevada mountains. He graduated from the Berkeley School of Forestry in 1973. In 1976 he entered into a partnership with Bruce Burton to form Willits Redwood Company.
