Rundell raises approximately 1800 market hogs per year purchased and bred through Farmers Hybrid genetic breeding program. Rundell and his wife, Kip, and their three year old daughter, Tammy, are living on a farm specializing in hog production. "Boar power" is the name used to identify the Farmers Hybrid swine breeding system. Farmers Hybrid is now a subsidiary of Monsanto, Inc., of St. Louis and is headquartered at Hampton, Iowa. Homer Eastman of rural Humboldt has been a dealer for the Farmers Hybrid swine breeding program for the past 20 years, has consistently ranked among the top dealers of the company with a very impressive 93 per cent repeat business from customers who have dealt with him. The Farmers Hybrid "Boar Power" breeding system is based on a rotational crossing program utilizing the five "new" pure breeds developed by the company. Boars from these breeds are allocated to customers in a specific rotation that is designed to maximize hybrid vigor. Each hoar sold t.o a customer is the son of a boar and son or grandson of a gilt that has been tested at the company's research farms near Hampton. Selection is based on superior performance in the profit-making traits of feed efficiency, rate of gain and carcass merit. Reproductive traits, such as litter size, conception rate, etc., are not highly heritable, but can be improved through effective Ube of crossbreeding. As the company sells a total breeding system, not just boars and gilts, it can manage a customer's breeding program so he can achieve maximum genetic progress, also benefit from hybrid vigor. Testing and intensive selection by the company results in consistent improvement and this improvement is passed on to customers with each new set of boars he buys. At the recent American Pork Congress, the following figures were cited as those that would by typical of the hog that "will be sold in 1985; market weight 240 lb.; age at market weight 150-175 days;' loin eye si/e 57 sq. in.; length 30-34 in.; feed efficiency, 2.70 lb. feed per pound of gain between 50 lb. and 240 lb.; carcass backfal. .between 1,0 and 1.3 in. Following are the figures compiled by 67 Farmers Hybrid pureline and crossbred pigs submitted for carcass evaluation in Feb. 1971. Market weight 236 lb.; age at market weight 150-175 days; average loin eye size 6.13 sq. in.; average length 32.2 in.; feed efficiency 2.80 lb. feed per pound of gain between 50 lb. and 220 lb.; carcass backfat averaged 1.20 in.; 54 of the 67 hogs achieved No. 1 grade at the Rath plant at Waterloo. Thus, Homer Eastman is convinced that his company is providing the hog of the future today and gives commercial pork producers the opportunity to gain a competitive advantage by producing their product more efficiently. Eastman and his wife, Vivian, have five children: Mrs. Richard (Becky) Williams of Yale; Dennis of Packwood; Brian of Glenwood; and Bruce and Barbara at home. They also have two grandchildren. Dennis is in the hog business, too. Of course, he uses Farmers Hybrid breeding stock. Homer is vice president of the Humboldt Lions Club, is on the administrative board of the United Methodist Church, is chairman of the Opportunity Center Board at Livermore and chairman of the Humboldt County Social Service Board.
