Hillsboro, Hoxie square off Friday Coin & Stamp Show Baseball Cards November 21-22 Holiday Inn 10th A Madison — Downtown Topeka HILLSBORO - They got there by different methods, but never- the-less, Hillsboro and Hoxie will meet in a Class 3A sub-state game here Friday night. The winner of the Hillsboro-Hoxie contest will advance to the Nov. 28 against the winner of the Silver Lake versus Neodesha game. Hillsboro received a state playoff berth via coin toss. The Trojans landed in a three-way tie along with two ranked Mid-Kansas League foes — Hesston and Halstead. When opponents' records couldn't decide the district winner, a coin toss was needed. Once in the playoffs, the Trojans defeated Clearwater in a bi-district game, 28-0, and then edged Belleville in the regionals, 14-10. On the other hand, the red-hot Hoxie Indians, now 10-1, breezed through their district to earn a playoff spot. In their bi-district game the Indians routed Lakin, 41-6, and then showed no respect for Plainville, the defending Class 3A champions. The Indians put on their most impressive showing this season last week by blanking the defending champs. Both Hillsboro and Hoxie will feature ground attacks although the Indians like to throw the football. In either case, both teams are capable of piling up points quickly. Halfbacks Dennis Heide and David Hilliard will lead the Trojans' offensive attack along with quarterback William Brenneman. The Trojans will have to stop a Hoxie offense that uses a combination of ground and air assaults. "I haven't seen them (Hoxie) yet, but from what I've heard, they have a very good quarterback," said Hillsboro coach Don Penner. That quarterback is 180-pound senior Kevin Ziegler and Indian coach Warren Sager will confirm the Hoxie signal-caller is a good one. "Kevin has been outstanding in our two playoff games," Sager said. "He's done an excellent job and he's had to sacrifice some of his personal goals for the sake of the team." Ziegler's main target will be tight end Brad Lambert, who has caught four passes for 85 yards during the playoffs. Hoxie's other offensive threats are running backs Mark Cooper and Les Sealock. Cooper picked up 85 yards on nine carries against Lakin while Sealock gained 110 yards on 15 carries against the Broncs. Sealock also recorded an additional 88 yards against the Cardinals. Other area teams in regional action Friday night include: Wellington at Norton in Class 4A; Frontenac at Clifton-Clyde and Victoria at Claflin in Class 2A; and Ransom at Fowler in Eight-Man. Volleyball deadline set An entry deadline of Nov. 30 has been set for the second session of the Salina Recreation Commission's women's volleyball league. The entry fee is $20 per team. Games will be played each Thursday at the KTI Recreation Center beginning Dec. 3.
