A new standard Put something besides paper inyour portfolio. One of the cornerstones of your financial future could well be gold. In Europe where there is long experience with gold as a hedge against inflation, people often have 10 to of their assets in gold. And much of this gold is in the form of South African Krugerrands. Tens of millions of Krugerrands have been sold throughout the world, more than 3 million in the United States in 1978 alone! Why this popularity? Because the Krugerrandunlike other gold coins- -contains exactly one troy ounce of pure gold, for it was intended from the start to be a convenient form of gold bullion.

Krugerrands are for people who want to own gold. Krugerrands are sold at: ERIE PITTSBURGH The 1-oz. content makes it easy. All you have to do to know the value of your Krugerrands at any time is look up the world price-per-ounce of gold published daily in the newspapers. Then add a few dollars, because the Krugerrand has a slightly higher valuation due to costs of coinage and distribution.

In the United States, where it has only recently been possible to purchase gold, the sale of Krugerrands has gravitated primarily to coin dealers and firms specializing in precious metals-and that is where you can buy them. (And also sell them, for there is always a ready market for Krugerrands.) Of course, the price of gold does fluctuate. The Krugerrand The world's best way to own gold. Jack M. But over the centuries, decades and years, it has tended to retain its value by the only measure that counts--purchasing power. Thus, you can regard your Krugerrands as a long-term asset to tide you over a period of monetary instability. They are a storehouse of value in concentrated form.

Judging from the past, gold is less vulnerable than a good number of other financial entities that are found in portfolios.
