They will be in Lindsborg Oct. 9 for a symposium and free public lecture in Presser Hall Auditorium. The Nobel laureates jointly speaking on "Waging Peace in the 21st Century" will be human-rights activist Mairead Corrigan Maguire of Northern Ireland, former President of Costa Rica Oscar Arias and T NATIONAL LIFE CHAIN '97 Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel. Their program is sponsored by the Johnson Lecture Series founded by Lucy and Charles Johnson of McPherson. It will be the second time the three have appeared together. They will conduct a press conference beginning at 3:40 p.m. and conduct a campus symposium from 4 to 5 p.m. in Burnett Center. A private reception and dinner follow. The main presentation, a question- and-answer session, will be from 8 to 9:30 p.m. in Presser Hall. Maguire received the peace prize in 1976 for helping to promote a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Northern Ireland. She co-founded the Community of the Peace People. A 1987 Nobel recipient, Arias has worked since his election In 1986 to end war in Central America. Leaders of five Central American countries signed an Arias- sponsored peace plan that called for an immediate cease fire in all guerrilla wars, an end to outside military aid, general amnesty and negotiations between conflicting parties. He now heads the Foundation Arias that works to further peace and progress. Wiesel was awarded the peace prize in 1986 for his work on behalf of oppressed people worldwide. He is a survivor of the Auschwitz and Buchenwald Nazi death camps in World War II. After the war, Wiesel took up the causes of Soviet Jews, Nicaragua's Miskito Indians, Argentina's political prisoners, Cambodian refugees, the Kurds, and war victims elsewhere. Salinans can join anti-abortion event By The Journal Staff People in the Salina area can join the National Life Chain '97 to stand publicly and pray for an end to abortion from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday. Salina's Life Chain will start to form at the intersection of Ninth and Cloud with people lining both streets to form a cross. Participants will be given signs to hold as they pray* The signs will read "Abortion Kills Children," "Jesus Forgives and Heals," "Adoption: the Loving Option," "Lord, Forgive Us and Our Nation," "Abortion Hurts Women" and "Life: the First Inalienable Right." This will be the seventh year for the event in Salina, which is also expected to occur in 800 cities and towns in the U.S. and Canada, In previous years, about 150 people have attended the Salina event, which started at Ninth and Crawford. Signs will be available at that location in case people come to the wrong intersection. "We're hoping the chain will reach that far," said Marlene Bonilla, a local organizer of the event. Since the Life Chain ministry was founded in 1987, about 4,000 separate "chains" have formed as a peaceful demonstrations and no pro-life participants have been cited for violent acts, according to organizers. The event is non-denominational.
